We had the good fortune of connecting with Shelby Gipson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Shelby, have there been any changes in how you think about work-life balance?
I’ve been in business for roughly 4 years now, and my work life balance has shifted tremendously over the years. When I first started my business, I was always accessible, a people pleaser, and lacked boundaries. However, over time, I’ve created healthy boundaries for myself and my business that has ultimately allowed me to flourish in every aspect of my life. Prioritizing rest, self care, physical and mental health, saying no when necessary, and truly placing value in my “off days” has shifted how I show up for my business in a positive way. Being intentional when it comes to nourishing the relationship that you have with yourself, with God, and with your community are all key factors to creating a meaningful and impactful business.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Unlike most, I would have to say the story leading up to my career as a salon owner and beauty professional would be considered untraditional to most people… but that’s what I love and cherish the most about my story; That it’s DIFFERENT. Let’s rewind back to 2010, when I graduated high school, went away to college at Western Michigan University, and no clue or direction on what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. Eventually, I decided to pursue a career in film, video, and media studies where I graduated with a bachelor’s degree in 2014 .(I know you’re probably thinking this has nothing to do with her career now but keep reading, it’ll all come together) I then went on to work as a journalist at a NBC News affiliate for 4 years. At the time, I loved my career however, I still felt lost almost as if I wasn’t following my true purpose or calling. It was then that I started to dig deeper within myself and truly question some of the decisions I had made for my life. I then decided to follow my heart, go to beauty school, and instantly fell in love! Finally! After many learned lessons and thousands of dollars spent, I felt as if I was doing what I was called to do! So fast forward to now! I have been owning and operating Glow Beauty Bar; A 5-star, luxury spa, in the metro Detroit area for going on 4 years now! I am so proud to say that with consistency, hard work, dedication to my craft, and preparation, I have been able to create a place for hundreds if not thousands of people to unwind, feel comfortable, relax, and gain confidence. When I created Glow Beaut Bar I didn’t want to limit my business to solely offering beauty services but I envisioned my business as an empire. Today, I can proudly say that Glow has become a brand that reflects positivity, self awareness, self care, and self development through our mentorship programs, Glow Girl apparel, community engagement, and much more.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would like to give a shoutout to my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. I wouldn’t be who I am or where I am without his undeniable and unconditional love, mercy, and grace!
