We had the good fortune of connecting with Shawnee Cana and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Shawnee, how has your perspective on work-life balance evolved over time?
I was teaching full time and doing hair behind the chair on the weekends before I found out I was pregnant. I really loved staying busy and making money. I was 22 and thought I could do that forever. That was until my son came and made me a mother. I had to re evaluate everything. It made me realize that I do value my career but the clients come and go and family is here to stay. I still struggle with finding the perfect balance some days but we make it work.

What should our readers know about your business?
My business is a four chair boutique hair salon called MÌRAME. Which means look at me in Spanish. We are three friends who share the same idea about what we think the salon experience should be. Somewhere you feel at home and like you’re catching up with friends. Somewhere you can have a blanket if you’re cold or snacks if you’re hungry. The great hair when you leave is just the added bonus. I feel like I’ve made it where I’m at off pure luck but I’ve taken a few risks in my career, usually when I’m not happy with management, so it makes sense that I ended up being my own boss. I feel so blessed and fortunate to be able to create with my hands and talk to friends/clients all day.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
My favorite places to frequent are LDU coffee. Everyone there is just perfect.

Then I’ll hit up Leila Bakery for a pastry or kolache. It’s very cute in there and I haven’t had anything I didn’t like so far. I would probably take them to Bishop Arts and we could walk around and check out the cute shops. I like the self care shop Go Easy and the boutique Magic Hour. Maybe we could check out Lula B’s for some vintage furniture finds. Then go grab a drink on Lower Greenville at singlewide. My favorite dive bar.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would like to shout out my fellow salon co owners Amy Allen and Vanessa Munoz. Without them I definitely would not be where I’m at right now. I know I couldn’t do it alone. I love you guys.
