We had the good fortune of connecting with Sévon and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Sévon, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I think the most important thought was “you cannot work a job.” I have had that in my mind since I was a child. It truly manifested itself in my adulthood. From there, I began to try things to understand my true interests. Then It went from “I like this” to “I like this, how can we get this to make me money?” Then that went to “how do we create a system for this to always make me money?” The thought process is the same for each of my business ventures. The most important part of business is making sure you’re always in business which is consistency. Just keep going and keep reinventing yourself.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Sé My Name Media is a media company that focuses on helping its customers build its online presence. We help our clients build their online presence through websites, graphics, social media management, photography and videography. What sets my company apart from others is how involved I am from start to finish. I pride myself on connecting with my customers, constant communication and making their vision come to life. My business is your business and my company is her it ensure you have a strong online visual presence. I started Sé My Name Media years ago under the name Stay Up Media. I took odds and ends jobs here and there but never committed to my craft. Once I began studying Communications Technology at UNT Dallas I began to take it more serious. I was able to run the social media for Sankofa Kitchen and from there I was able to build into the company I am today. I was also able to create Faceoff Boutique, which is my clothing boutique that is currently rebranding and expanding. Was it easy? If it were, everyone would do it. It takes a lot more courage than a little. It takes being around people who push you to be your absolute best and sometimes there is no one to push you, you have to do it alone. I know it sounds cliche but you cannot give up. If you want it, really want it; you can’t give up. If I haven’t learned anything else it is that structure is necessary when running a business and you cannot stop when times get hard. You change the plan, never the goal.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Go to Sankofa Kitchen! It is delicious and vegan friendly. When I am in the mood for some kid friendly fun I love going to the Dallas World Aquarium with my son. When it’s time for mommy to have some fun I love going to karaoke at Gator’s with my best friend. The more you drink, the better I sound. Trust and believe.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
The wisdom I have acquired is not of my own but of my mentor and friend Damond Fields. When you credit my success it is because he allowed me the space to grow. I am positive I would be still running into walls if it were not for him saying time and time again “put your arms out.” He and Jae Jones, the woman who literally in my last 2 semesters of nursing school woke me up and said “this is not the life for you,” changed the course of my life forever and I am so thankful for their impact on my life. Of course my parents who have built a village and refuge for my son. My best friend, Rae who has been here every step of the way. Qwe, for being my accountability partner and friend and last but certainly not least, my son. My son and his smile are the reasons I cannot give up. He is the fire behind every decision I make.
