We had the good fortune of connecting with SEMAJE and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi SEMAJE, what role has risk played in your life or career?
Taking risks is just as important as breathing, honestly. You can’t really live life without them. Everything we do involves some form of risk, and it’s not always a bad thing. When you’re moving with faith and believing that something good will come out of it, risk becomes a whole different thing. It’s about putting yourself out there with the hope that something better is on the other side. Life’s all about betting on yourself, right?

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I’m a Christian artist from Detroit, and it’s been a real blessing to create music that spreads faith, love, and the truth of JESUS. What really fires me up about my career is seeing how the music I make touches people and helps shift their perspective. There’s nothing more powerful than seeing someone light up because they know JESUS is the true source of joy.

Being an artist who stands firm in faith isn’t always easy, but it’s always worth it. The world’s full of challenges, but that’s where growth happens. One thing I’ve learned is I wasn’t made to be perfect – but I was made to show the world the One who is. JESUS makes life worth living, and I want to be part of that change.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
My mom moved to Dallas over 5 years ago, and I’m there so often now, it’s like my second home whenever I’m not in Detroit. Some of my favorite spots in Dallas? Neiman Marcus Last Call at Grapevine Mall, I always find the flyest clothes at a solid price. I’m also all about NorthPark Mall, the vibe there is next level. The aesthetic, the stores ,it’s just a dope place to hang out, honestly. And don’t even get me started on the food , I eat everywhere. Dallas is just a vibe. It’s one of those places where you can pull up anywhere and have a good time, whether it’s shopping, catching a church service, going to a concert, or grabbing a bite. The city’s got a little something for everyone.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
God, my parents, grandparents, siblings, and friends who are like family – they all make up my village. They keep me grounded, keep me going, and remind me of what’s important. And I can’t forget my creative team – Shajuan ‘BBearded’ Andrews, Anesha Birchett, and Jamel Smith – they’re apart of my biggest joy and that’s creating music get faith to the world.
