Meet Sean Furey | Screenwriter & Filmmaker

We had the good fortune of connecting with Sean Furey and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Sean, what habits do you feel helped you succeed?
Allowing myself to imagine and dream. That seems obvious, but coming off of a left-brain career, sometimes I feel like I’m still scraping the rust off of my imagination.
Regular exercise. I like walking on the Trinity River for a few miles a day. Nothing crazy, but it helps so much. My mental health is so much better when I’m walking, and that translates into better writing sessions.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
There have been many challenges along the way. I suffer from Major Depressive Disorder, anxiety, and PTSD, which at times can be debilitating. Somewhere along the way, I got the idea that I wanted to share these conditions with the world in the hopes that my experiences may help someone else out there who struggles with the same things. To that end, I wrote a film called The Hard Way, which explores my panic attacks through a horror/thriller lens. It was the most cathartic and rewarding experience of my life to direct that film this past year with a lightning-in-a-bottle cast and crew. It will have its festival premiere this fall. My goal is to get the film in front of as many audiences as possible in the hope that it’ll reach someone who is battling their own demons. I want them to know that those demons can be beaten.
I’m still working to overcome these obstacles myself, but using art to explore those feelings has been an amazing, eye-opening experience so far.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
There’s no shortage of great restaurants here! I would take my friend to F1 Smokehouse, Dutch’s Burgers, Tommy’s Burgers, Mercado Juarez, Terrebonne’s, JD’s Hamburgers…
Definitely brunch at F1 Smokehouse before visiting the Amon Carter Museum. After that, I would show them a couple breweries – HopFusion and Martin House are my favorites. I write at Martin House from time to time – the creative vibes there are amazing.
I’d also show them the Fort Worth Zoo and the Dallas World Aquarium.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Tyler Harden, the producer and 1st AD of my newest film, The Hard Way. Tyler took an interest in the script and became an invaluable resource for meeting other professionals and bringing everything together to bring the film to life. He’s the epitome of working hard and treating people with the utmost respect. Working with Tyler made me a better person and a better filmmaker.
