We had the good fortune of connecting with Scott Sean White and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Scott Sean, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I don’t know if I would call it a thought process or not, really. Deciding to be a songwriter – in today’s streaming world – is not what the world would consider “wise.” But what would be even more “unwise” is NOT doing what I was made to do, what I feel like I have no other choice BUT to DO, what I felt called to do beyond any doubt. And so far – despite what the world says – it’s working out 🙂 I get to do what I LOVE to do and make a living at it.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’m most excited about the process of songwriting. I LOVE it. There are a lot of days where it’s what some folks would call a “struggle” – days when it’s HARD to figure out how to write this song, this idea – in the best way it can be written. I LOVE those days. I love the digging! And honestly, the more I do this – it’s that way most days. I’ve gotten where I am so far because I’ve been surrounded by a bunch of talented folks pulling me up with them. I pay attention in every room and learn in every room. I’m most proud of the moments where someone at a show comes up and tells me how a song of mine spoke something to them that they needed that night. THAT’S the big stuff. I’m excited for some of the business side of things, too – like Cody Johnson recording a couple of my songs on his last album “Human.” (Songs that I am also proud of artistically.) And some independent artists and smaller label artists recording my songs and putting them out in the world. The biggest challenge in this business is simply to not give up. It takes a lot longer than you want it to. One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is… to be ME. Unapologetically, completely me. Try to write GREAT songs every day – not HIT songs. I fail MOST of the time, but the high I get when we DO write a great song… there ain’t nothing like it. I’ve learned to just write ’em and let the chips fall where they may as to whether or not they get recorded or released or singled or whatever. I cant’ control any of that.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I’d take ’em to listening rooms where the owners and the staff LOVE songs and songwriters and music. I’d take ’em to The Post in FW, Love & War in Plano, Dan’s Silverleaf in Denton, Six Springs Tavern in Richardson, Bay at the Lake in Pottsboro, Magnolia Motor Lounge in FW, and a bunch of other places like those. We’d eat at Terilli’s on lower Greenville, or Hutchins BBQ in McKinney, or Pappadeaux’s in Richardson, or our favorite little mexican restaurant over here near Poetry, TX, where we live. I’m all about music – so their trip here would be all about that haha!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Ok – no cheese here at all. Not trying to give you a “stock” answer or whatever. The first answer is Jesus. For real. For all the obvious reasons – the talent, the opportunities, and everything that enables me to do this crazy life. He makes it all happen. The second is my wife, Brenda. She doesn’t “put up” with my schedule where I’m gone pretty much 3 weeks per month – she THRIVES in it, and PUSHES me in it, and never lets me give up. I wouldn’t be doing this if it wasn’t for her. Period. The third could be a few hundred different people but – at the moment – I’m going to say the community of folks here in Texas that support us singer-songwriters. They host house concerts and have us come play, the show up at the venues and the festivals and they buy merch and encourage us. It’s a BEAUTIFUL set of people and we are all so grateful for them.
