We had the good fortune of connecting with Scott Dalrymple and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Scott, how do you think about risk?
Without taking risks I would not have owned the businesses I have, However, there is risk taking and then very planned out risk taking in order to minimize the risk. Always ask a lot of questions from various sources. I am not into reinventing the wheel-just keeping a successful wheel rolling. That is why I am mainly interested in existing businesses that have a good track record that are interesting to me. I whole heartedly believe in learning from other people’s experience. Once you move forward you can take your time to tweak things to your style. Don’t jump into something just because it appeals to you if the numbers don’t make sense. If something seems off, it probably is.

What should our readers know about your business?
In many ways it was a long climb to where I am as a successful business owner. I worked many different jobs throughout my life including ophthalmic photographer, optical store owner, photo studio owner, and now candy store owner. Each job taught me basic business and how to communicate simply and clearly with my patients/customers. Creatively I performed on keyboards for many years in the Dallas area. I played for just about every charity ball, golf tournament, wedding, and party you can name including the republican convention in New York City followed by President Bush’s inaugural ball in 2005. Performing was a great outlet to boring daytime jobs and always boosted my confidence.
I love my current store. It has a great retro theme (it is Atomic Candy after all). It provides a great experience for all ages. Older customers love the nostalgia candy. College kids like the current sour candy and humorous novelty items we offer. Young and old like to just look at the odd collection of things we have on display. The world should know we offer a little something for everyone.
The main things I learned along the way consisted of seeing how I would not run things or treat people if given the chance. Fun with common sense rules the day. I hope my employees take that with them into the real world. Most of my employees are in college so it is fun to mentor them and watch them make life realizations along the way.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
BBQ of course! It all depends on their interests. Everyone seems interested in the Kennedy museum and Cowboy Stadium. I love the Arboretum as well for just hanging out. Of course I would show them the square in Denton and give them a tour of Atomic Candy.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My wife has always been a good sounding board. She does not take risk lightly and has a good understanding of the numbers in running a business. Other folks along the way from friends to business acquaintances have provided good input. Sometimes not so good input but that is usually out of an abundance of caution. The previous candy store owner was a fountain of information and continues to be a good source of information. His name is Tim Loyd and he is very busy being a new dad to two young kids.
