We had the good fortune of connecting with Scot Cockroft and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Scot, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
When I started I wanted to be in control of my future. Many similarities back then to now. Economy was up and down so much uncertainty. The last thing in the world I wanted was the uncertainty of working for someone else. That seemed like a type of prison
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
After 911 I was laid off a job I had for 10 years prior. So I started a janitorial company and soon grew it via acquisitions of other janitorial companies. In a few short years I was able to sell the company. In late 2003 I decided to start a business brokerage company. But from selling my own company and interviewing numerous business brokers in Dallas I knew most were only interested in the commissions or upfront fees they would get if they sold my business. I knew there was a gap in North Texas for quality business brokers. So I wanted to start a new kind of business broker. One that was interested in the goals and desires of the business owner over the commissions. One that provided quality CIM’s (promotional items when selling a business) and video interviews with the owners. I started a company that was passionate about presenting the genius of the business owner aside from the profitability of the company. Yes most businesses are sold based on profit. But there is more than profit. If there isn’t. It isn’t fun.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
We would visit the Star and the Dallas Cowboys. I have always been a fan and love the fact that we have a unique interactive experience with the dallas cowboys in frisco. Combine that with great restaurants at the star. Oh and we would have to spend time are Red River in Arlington.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
This may seem odd but great small business owners across Texas. It’s true when I started I worked with so many quality business owners that helped mentor me. Lyn Ayers was one that stuck out. When working with him he literally grew me exponentially. I helped him sell his business back in 2006. But it was more of an education in M&A and oil and gas. It literally changed my life.
