We had the good fortune of connecting with Sarah O’Neal and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Sarah, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
Taking a leap definitely got me on my way to my career in photography. I was originally a science major, switched to journalism, fell in love with photography as more than a hobby, and jumped into managing a portrait studio at 21. I took a second leap to go out on my own and go full-time freelance several years ago. I wanted the chance to use more creativity and have more variety in what I was able to shoot. Variety is what I strive for in all aspects of my life, and my career is no different. A lot of photographers find great success in a single niche of photography, but I have done a bit of everything, including portraiture, events, government awards ceremonies, drag shows, weddings, and fashion events. Choose a job you love, and you’ll never work a day in your life is the truest statement Confucius ever said. Sometimes you have to take that leap and work out the details when you land.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I strive to create images that are new and interesting, whether it’s a classic idea with a fresh spin or something completely new. I find I thrive when collaborating with other creatives. One of my favorite things to shoot is Drag Fashion. Creating images that break the binary and stretch our perceptions, or redefine boundaries is a real thrill.
It has certainly been a long road getting to a place where I can fully support myself on a freelance income. I have quite a few amazing dedicated clients that I work with yearly, and for all the special moments in their lives. I also pick up extra contract work to fill the gaps, and my work varies quite a lot from season to season. I’ve been lucky enough to work with Enchant Christmas the last several years as my Winter Event, which has been a really exciting project that I hope to continue with for many years.
In the creative world, you hear a lot about working for exposure. It’s certainly a big part of the growing experience. It takes a lot of confidence to decide what jobs are right for you and to turn down the projects that aren’t a good fit. Getting to that balance is a huge learning curve. It can make or break your career deciding who to work with and to what extent. Always stay true to yourself, and sometimes it’s wonderful to take on a job that just brings you joy no matter what else you get from it.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
My itinerary would definitely include brunch at Beto & Sons for their liquid nitrogen mimosas. Their food is incredible as well as the atmosphere and service. The Wright Art Twins Gallery would be a stop as well. They showcase amazing talent, generally new to the art scene. It’s always a good time. The Dock Bookshop in Fort Worth is a wonderful shop. The also host some really cool events. We are avid readers and love supporting awesome bookshops. White Rock Lake is one of my favorite outdoor stops in the area. There’s a beautiful spot where the pelicans often gather. It’s a lovely place for a picnic and some bird watching. Depending on who’s playing, Billy Bob’s is such a unique experience for out of town guests. The disco ball saddle is a creative touch that I’ve always loved. Shoals Sounds and Service in Deep Ellum is one of my favorite spots for drinks and snacks. Their food is varied and amazing. The sweet plantains should not be missed!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Old School National Geographic is what first sparked my interest in photography. Someday shooting for National Geographic is still a goal of mine I’ve yet to accomplish. Using imagery and creativity to call attention to the most beautiful aspects of the Earth while rallying for the creatures and environments that need us the most is the ultimate dream.
