We had the good fortune of connecting with Sara Mucowski, M.D. and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Sara, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
Typically, being a physician isn’t considered an artistic or creative career; however, it’s considered practicing the art of medicine for a reason. I would say that I was considered a creative kid – I was more excited to go to the craft store than the toy store! I was lucky that my parents encouraged my artistic side, but it was never a secret that I was a total science nerd. I cherished my chemistry set and would spend my allowance on slides to view under the microscope. I never missed a science fair and was most fascinated by Biology. In high school, I never felt creative enough to be considered one of the artistic kids. I appreciated art and loved working with my hands, but I didn’t have any great talent for painting or photography or any other medium that was part of the curriculum. So, I fell deeper into the nerd identity and embraced my AP and IB classes, became valedictorian, and got accepted to a combined BS/MD program.
It wasn’t until learning about the intricacies of endocrinology, specifically that of the menstrual cycle, that I realized how much of medicine truly is an art. Medicine is not a simple recipe to be followed, where performing it the same way every time results in the same outcome. Given that every woman is unique, each body can respond differently to various medications. A great example of this in reproductive medicine is women with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome, or PCOS. While oral ovulation induction agents may work well in most women with PCOS, others may need injections and/or surgical treatment to conceive, while others still may respond too robustly to medications and conceive multiples. As a result, becoming a Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility specialist, a physician that specializes in reproductive medicine, has allowed me to apply my creative side in the form of hormonal “recipes” to help others grow their families.

What should our readers know about your business?
I am most proud to be a part of a small business of physicians (half female owned) that have always valued representing a diverse view while being supportive and acceptant of all. Any small business owner will tell you that it presents unique challenges, but I truly believe that as a physician, taking the time to visit with each patient allows me to tailor a treatment plan that personally reflects their individual goals.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I always consider myself lucky to call Dallas home because there is so much to do! As a local to Lower Greenville, I would definitely recommend a walk to enjoy the eclectic scene – start with a coffee at La La Land, grab a pretzel croissant from The Village Bakery, and seeing the dancing frogs at Truck Yard. I would highly recommend taking the dogs for a walk (or bike ride) around White Rock Lake before catching the DART to explore Deep Ellum or cheer on the Stars at the AAC! For my friends interested in a more educational experience, sites like Fair Park, the Perot Museum, or Dealy Plaza, are always a great choice. And for those looking for a lighter experience, there’s always Southfork Ranch (cue the Dallas theme song).

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Without the ever-present love and support of my parents, who nourished my creative side while encouraging my love for science, I would have never realized that the two passions would present themselves as complimentary in the field of reproductive medicine.
