We had the good fortune of connecting with Sandra Hsieh and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Sandra, how has your background shaped the person you are today?
I am from Taiwan. Growing up, my parents were selling jeans in the night market as jeans wholesalers. My parents never skipped a day when they were able to do business. The only day off was when it was raining heavily. I needed to go out and help them on Fridays and Saturdays. I learned how to do business when I was 12 years old. Doing business is a complicated process. You need to deal with suppliers, clients, inventory, forecasts…and so on. I watched how my parents organized each factor in the process. This built my confidence to establish my own business. Another point was you couldn’t be lazy. You need to dedicate your time when you start a business until you have trained a manager to take care of daily tasks. Being involved in my parents’ small business inspired who I am today.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Allstar Haircuts has been in business for 14 years. I took over in March of 2024 because the previous owner wanted to slow down and take it easier. When I took over the salon, there was a shortage of hairdressers and barbers. Without a stable team, it made the business unstable. It was challenging to recruit hairdressers and barbers because the salon’s decor is a little outdated. I spent a few months to find one barber to join the team. Then I spent a few more months building a positive work culture. Now, I have a strong team of employees willing to take responsibility for the salon. This business is a big challenge for me because I am not a hairdresser or barber. I established language schools in Taiwan and built teams to run those schools now. What I did was leverage team-building skills to improve the salon. The key to a strong team is each member needs to be independent and take responsibility. As a leader, I need them to know I am reliable. They can try anything to make the salon better and I will support them.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I am a home person, I enjoy the grill and swimming pool. This is the reason why I chose Dallas. It is more wide open and natural. When I have friends visit, we hang out beside pool with grill and hometown food.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
“When I worked in high tech companies, my sales director Simon Huang raised my skills to another level not only in sales but also my life philosophy. He encouraged me to try different ways to fulfill customers’ demands and put myself in customers’ shoes. He also said being a sales requires honesty and Integrity. Do everything in a legal way, then we can go very far. Later in my career, I met another mentor, Kara Atchison. We used to work together and her American way influenced me a lot. You need to see the big picture and go into depth on every detail and make things right. Those two mentors helped build the foundation of everything I am doing now. “
