We had the good fortune of connecting with Samantha Faries and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Samantha, how do you think about risk?
There’s a lot to think about when a risk is put on the table. You start to question everything, will this be a failure, will it be worth it, when will I see the results I am hoping for, and that’s just the start of it. All of these questions were heavy on my mind when deciding which career path to take, and continued to come about at each milestone. I have learned that taking risks is the most important part of growth and where I feel most of my success has come from. If I hadn’t taken the risk to start this career that wouldn’t have led to starting my own brand, getting an assistant, or growing my social media platform. So, although the risk may be scary and there’s always th
e possibility of failure, the road it took to get there will always be worth it.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
The hair industry is such a hidden gem if you ask me, which makes me proud to be a part of it. Being surrounded by passionate people who constantly push you towards greatness is hard to come by and why I get so fired up about what I do. If you asked me why I started this many years ago, I would have said “to make people feel beautiful”, which is still true to this day, but even more now. These clients, coworkers, and friends I’ve met along the way remind me why I do this. I get to be a therapist, creator, scientist, mentor, teacher, the list seriously goes on and on. It’s not easy and it’s an overwhelming job to take on but the reward is worth it. My biggest piece of advice for someone taking a peek into the life of a stylist would be to stay humble ( yes, I love a Tim McGraw song but I still mean it) and be original. There is so much to learn and people to meet, the opportunities are endless. As far as original goes, follow your arrow because that’s what sets you apart… even if it’s a glam cowgirl like me!
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Food and music are the way to my heart so this should be easy. I love the Fort Worth stockyards but if I’m wanting something local Hank’s in Mckinney is such a good concert venue. For a more laid back evening I will go to Truck Yard in the Colony, they have the best food trucks and live music. Lastly, I’ve got to support my Frisco Rail District buddies, Eight 11 and La Finca. Eight 11 has the best wine and snacks for happy hour and the coffee at La Finca is out of this world.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
A successful career couldn’t be built without the many people helping along the way. It all started for me with the most supportive family (especially my mama & sister) who encouraged me to follow this passion of mine. That led me to the Toni & Guy Hairdressing Academy where I met some amazing instructors and laid the groundwork for the rest of my career. Shortly after graduating from cosmetology school I started my apprentice program under Shae Cates who taught me everything I needed to know to go on the floor and gave me the confidence to be anything I wanted to be. Even though I thought it would stop there, I continued to meet like minded people in the industry and had the support of the salon I work at now, Atrium Salon and Studio. Your circle matters and the people closest to you are a huge part of your forever, so choose wisely.
