Meet Samantha Davis | Small Business Owner

We had the good fortune of connecting with Samantha Davis and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Samantha, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
Honestly, it’s something that I’ve been wanting to do for as long as I can possibly remember. I didn’t really think about doing anything else, even though I know that in this day and age, I’m going to have to do something else alongside my shop to help to supplement it. Still, it’s something that I hope to bring more to the forefront and focus solely on that. It’s something of a long term goal I’ve set for myself, while I experiment on what kind of products, what mediums work best for me.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My art is ever changing, really. I’d love to settle on a more cute and free style, but that’s still a work in progress. No ‘cutesy’ or ‘kawaii’ style is alike, but I do take inspiration from others such as Tasty Peach Studios and Katnipp. Just watching how my style has grown in the past five years alone has made me feel really proud. Heck, even the past year my style has changed.
Art is never really easy, it’s just a constant learning process. Sometimes, in that process, you also need to take a step back to observe what you’ve done. I feel like, right now, I’m in that ‘step back and observe’ phase as I’m continuing to grow. What can I do differently next time, compared to last time? How do these stickers appeal to the customer? Do these greeting cards work? While my ultimate goal is indeed to share my art with others, and spread a bit of happiness and joy, I’m currently asking myself how I can better do this. I guess, I’m in the middle of overcoming the challenge I’ve set upon myself.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
You know what’s funny? I actually do this! My best friend sometimes comes in from South Carolina for visits, and between each visit, I’ll just jot down places to eat or go and explore, because chances are I’m not always going to remember. They’re just silly little places, like taking them out to Ikea to get lost, because there isn’t one nearby where they live, or to get lunch at Whataburger, which is always a must at some point. There’s just so many interesting places within the Metroplex that a week isn’t enough time to explore them all!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
There’s two people that I can think of right off that bat. Okay, maybe three, since two are a packaged deal. Those first two being my parents, of course. My mama was always the loudest cheerleader, my dad is more the silent, ‘I’ll help you carry all this stuff’ kind of guy. Mama always loved to show off the new things I’ve produced on Facebook, and it always made me smile. She passed recently, so I’ll miss that going forward, but I know she’s still off doing that on her next adventure.
The other person is my former boss who was honestly more of a mentor to me, Byron Black. I worked under him as a studio lab assistant for roughly five years at North Lake while I finished up my degree in Computer Graphics. It was at the end of my school days where he kept nudging me to do something with my art while I was developing my portfolio. I can’t recall the finer details after so long, but he’s always given me pointers on my art, was someone I could bounce ideas off of. I’m just grateful to have him in my life, and appreciate everything he and my parents have done for me so far.
