We had the good fortune of connecting with Rocio Villegas and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Rocio, why did you pursue a creative career?
I was bitten by the creative bug in 3rd grade when my teacher assigned the class a project to make a scale model of the Alamo when learning about it. With the help of my older sister, sticks and rocks from my garden, cardboard and the trustee glue gun, my model came in first place and was displayed in the school library for years. By the age of 10 I had already completed a few quilt squares and was in the process of learning embroidery and from then on my curiosity grew and lead me to learn many other craft making skills. My family and friends would always suggest I begin to sell the items I made as I was able to make various crafts by hands and it was not until last year when I decided to kick this into high gear and share my abilities with the world by creating Owl Craft for You to help people make their handcrafted gift ideas a reality for their loved ones.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Starting a business is always a challenge and a risk that the business owner takes, so it was not easy to start. Although I am able to make many items by hand, it was difficult to jump in to an ocean of handmade and established shops. I am still learning about and trying to overcome small business challenges such as pricing and factoring in transaction fees in the various business online shops and expanding my clientele. I would love the world to know that each and every item in my shop is unique and made with lots of love!
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I love traveling and exploring new places so this question is right up my alley. To give my friend a truly North Texas experience I would take them to the stock yards to see the longhorns and the rodeo, the Fort Worth Zoo, Dallas World Aquarium, North Park Center for a fun shopping experience and a stroll around the Margaret Hunt Hill Bridge. We would eat BBQ at Hard 8, Mexican food at El Tizoncito and Chilangos Tacos, pizza at Coal Vines, brunch at Snooze AM, drinks with a view of our beautiful skyline at Happiest Hour and treats from Emporium Pies, Sprinkles and Pure Milk and Honey.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I am very thankful to my family and friends who encouraged me to open and pursue my small business career. with out their love and encouragement I would not have had to courage to open and create Owl Craft For You.
