We had the good fortune of connecting with Rob Dopp and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Rob, what’s the most important lesson your business/career has taught you?
No matter how many times you get that no for sales or you get beat up just from the daily grind. You have to get back up hold your head up and move forward. It’s hard sometimes to do that but the reward in the end is so worth it. Every mistake I have made I have learned from it. And it’s ok to make mistakes otherwise you won’t learn.

What should our readers know about your business?
Rum Runners BBQ started out as just a competition team traveling the bbq circuit in the beginning. We developed a rub/seasoning and now we have that on the market with a few more coming down the road. It’s challenging because my wife and I both still work full times jobs and raising a kid makes time management tough. But you have fight through it and get things done. We love the pirate life and the island life. So that is kind of the inspiration for Rum Runners. In our minds we can get swept away from the everyday life as we know it and use a little spice, drink a little rum, and just relax.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
We have a bunch of hole in the wall joints in Florida we can go to that have off the chain food and drinks. The beach is one of the best places to go and hang for a day. Maybe doing a little fishing and come back with a fresh catch and throw it on the grill. A lot of our friends are out of state but when we do get together it’s a party.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
There are so many people in the bbq world that inspire us. Brad and Brooke from the Shed, Michael from Shiners Craft BBQ and Mark from Sundown Smokehouse are just a few people that support our journey. They give us advice when we need it.
