We had the good fortune of connecting with Rick McNeely and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Rick, how did you come up with the idea for your business?
I work as a radio DJ and the DFW area. We love to reach our audience with music, events and humor. I wanted to come up with the way to make everyone’s day brighter when I’m on air. So I found creative ways to make holidays that people can enjoy on a daily basis.
I came across a holiday calendar that certifies your celebration ideas. After receiving the criteria for qualification, I submitted my first idea and First holiday. National selfie day was created June 21st 2014. After going viral in 2016, I decided to concentrate on others and came up with over 25 more holidays including National barbecue day, brisket day, hip Hop day, and chicken fried steak day.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
A holiday creator has a very simple job. You take ideas from your environment and you turn them in the positive celebrations. For instance, National selfie day was created so people can take selfies and an artistic fashion. It’s part of our long-term pop culture. These things can define a decade or a country. We’ve taken it now to where not only is it fashionable, it’s almost required in some instances especially when it comes to online promotions and influences. I was happy to contribute to a trend that will be here forever.
It’s not easy creating a holiday. There are technical aspects you must adhere to, and not all will be accepted. These are not celebrations that are recognized by our government but they are fun things to do for leisure. Life is about having fun so I encourage you to invest in what makes you happy and see if it’s a celebration that’s attached to it. You’ll be surprised in your own research.
I would like the world to know that I have created almost 30 different celebrations and will soon have a record and being recognized as the man who’s created the most holidays by one person. it’s a goal that I’ve been trying to achieve and this year I should be able to take that and list it on a record book.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
One of my favorite spots is the Dallas arts district. You can’t go wrong by supporting your local artist. My home has been decorated with paintings and sculptures from DFW artist. Your community need your support and I’m 100% about supporting our creative Texans and every way possible. I encourage everyone to take some time to go visit the arts district and show your support!
The DFW metroplex has so much to offer. They’re a great places in Dallas to visit but you can also explore Arlington’s Entertainment district as well. Texas live and their surroundings are one of my favorite places to go when I have a long weekend. The food is good, their entertainment venue is awesome and it’s the perfect place to bring a family.
West 7th Street in Fort Worth is my win over there. They literally took a handful of everything and put it all in a couple of blocks within walking distance of each other and it’s a hit! You’ll find everything for seafood to Tex-Mex to hip Hop to rock and roll. Thumbs up!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I want to get a big shout out to Fishbowl Radio Network! This radio station has launched my career and giving me the direction to continue entertaining people worldwide. We are the biggest internet radio station in our state and we’ve opened up the door for radio personalities to express themselves and sharpen their creativity skills. I’ve won several awards in my career on this network to include best male dj, best radio show and best interviews.
A big shout out to my family who never gave up on me and encouraged me to be the best I can daily. My parents had a very influential and positive career choices I’ve made in my life. A big thanks to them!
