We had the good fortune of connecting with Regeanie Corona and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Regeanie, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I have always wanted to have time freedom and control how I spend my time. Time is one thing that we can never get back so it is important that we use it wisely. As a wife and mom, I wanted to be more available to my family, while still satisfying my desire to have a rewarding career. The answer for me came in the form of entrepreneurship. Additionally, I wanted to have the freedom to decide how I engage in the marketplace and which parts of my skillsets and expertise I would utilize. I chose to start a nonprofit, as well as a for-profit consulting company so that I could combine all that I love doing as an entrepreneur while also giving back in a way that has a multiplied effect.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
In 2015, I started Advancing The Seed, a nonprofit whose purpose is to reduce poverty by developing strong leaders for business and community engagement so that they can positively impact the economy within their families and their communities. It was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. We work with marginalized individuals to introduce them to career pathways and asset-building opportunities all through training, coaching, and mentoring in financial management, entrepreneurship, life skills, workforce readiness, leadership development, and social responsibility.
The decision to branch out and start a nonprofit was not an easy decision and it hasn’t been an easy path. In 2013, I made a gutsy decision to walk away from a successful Information Technology/Cyber Security career. This was a difficult decision because I was giving up two things that were important to my identity at the time: (1) financial stability and (2) being a successful minority woman in the tech field. I took on nonprofit consulting work in the first couple of years as I began to learn the needs of many startup and small nonprofits. I was able to lend my background and skills to help those nonprofits raise money through grants and sponsorships, develop their programs, implement technology to create automation and systems in their infrastructure, and I was able to help them strategize for sustainability and future growth. I loved the work and wanted to have a greater impact.
I think I can write a book about all of the challenges and hurdles encountered along the way. Everything from how to pay the bills and maintaining consistent cash flow, to knowing when to value me enough to be willing to say “no” to those things that don’t make me happy. The journey has not been smooth for sure, but it has been well worth it.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I would drive up the Malibu coast and take a walk on the beach. Then we would check out Santa Monica Pier and Venice beach and visit a couple of the local beachfront eateries. We would definitely have to check out Nobu LA one night. Before the pandemic, we would have also gone to the Stinking Rose.
We would check out the Art District near Downtown LA and catch lunch at the Urth Cafe. We would visit the museums at Exposition Park. And we would most definitely have to check out a Dodger home game at the newly remodeled Dodger stadium. Finally, we can’t complete our tour of the LA area without supporting a small local eatery known for its great Mexican food, El Tepeyac Cafe in Los Angeles.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I’d like to dedicate my Shoutout to Dr. Natalie Phillips. She is my accountability partner, colleague, friend, and co-author of my book, ACT Now! A Simple Guide To Take Action On Your Greatest Goals and Dreams. She has encouraged and supported my efforts and helped to keep me accountable to my goals and dreams.
