We had the good fortune of connecting with Purva Jain and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Purva, can you tell us more about your background and the role it’s played in shaping who you are today?
I was born and raised in India, and my early years there gave me a deep appreciation for the role that home and family play in shaping who we are. Later, I lived in New York, where I was exposed to a wide range of design influences and a fast-paced, diverse way of living. The contrast between those two experiences — the strong sense of family and tradition I grew up with, and the dynamic, design-forward energy of New York — has shaped my approach to architecture and design today.

One pivotal moment in my journey was when my parents remodeled our home while I was in 4th grade. They brought me to every design and construction meeting, and I became fascinated by how spaces could be transformed to reflect not just aesthetics, but the rhythms of daily life. I saw how thoughtful design could support the way a family lives, connects, and celebrates together.

That philosophy has stayed with me. I take the design of a home — and its impact on family life — very seriously. A well-designed home is more than beautiful; it is a place that nurtures relationships, fosters joy, and adapts to the evolving needs of the people within it. I consider it a privilege to help clients create spaces that support and enhance their family life.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I run Purva Design Studio, a boutique architecture and design firm specializing in custom single-family homes. We also recently expanded into design-build through HEM Design Build, which allows us to bring a truly holistic approach to the projects we take on — from concept through construction.

What sets us apart is that we approach every home as a deeply personal story. I believe that a well-designed home should not only be beautiful — it should reflect the rhythms, values, and aspirations of the family living in it. Having been born and raised in India, and later living in New York, I bring a global perspective to design, while always keeping family life at the heart of what I do. I take the responsibility of shaping a family’s most intimate spaces very seriously.

I’m most proud of the trust my clients place in us. Many of our clients return to us for their second and even third homes, or refer us to their friends and family — to me, that is the greatest compliment. I’m also excited about growing the design-build side of the business; it allows us to deliver even more cohesive, thoughtful results for our clients.

The journey to this point hasn’t been easy. Building a business from scratch, particularly in a competitive market, requires resilience and a clear vision. There were times I questioned if I was on the right path. But I’ve learned that staying true to your values — and surrounding yourself with good people — is the key to navigating challenges. One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is that relationships matter just as much as design; the process should be as joyful and collaborative as the outcome.

If there’s one thing I’d want the world to know about our brand and story, it’s this: we design homes that support and elevate family life. Every detail matters because it’s in the details that life happens.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If my best friend were visiting for a week, I’d want them to experience the vibrant mix of culture, food, and community that makes Dallas so special. Here’s how I’d plan it:

Day 1 — Arrival & Welcome Dinner
We’d start with dinner at Uchi — one of my absolute favorites for a special first night out. The atmosphere is amazing, and even as a vegetarian, I always find plenty of incredible dishes to enjoy. Then a walk around Knox-Henderson to soak in the energy.

Day 2 — Arts & Design
A morning at the Dallas Museum of Art and Nasher Sculpture Center — I always find them inspiring. Lunch at Tei-An in the Arts District. In the afternoon, a stroll through the Design District to check out local galleries and shops.

Day 3 — Architecture & Neighborhoods
We’d tour some of my favorite Dallas neighborhoods — Highland Park, Swiss Avenue, and parts of Lakewood — for beautiful architecture and tree-lined streets. Coffee at Foxtrot Market, and dinner that night at Velvet Taco — because no trip to Dallas is complete without a casual, fun taco night. Their creative vegetarian tacos are a favorite of mine!

Day 4 — Outdoor Adventure
A day outdoors at White Rock Lake — biking, or walking. We’d grab a picnic from Eatzi’s and enjoy it by the lake. Evening drinks on the rooftop at HG Sply Co. in Lower Greenville.

Day 5 — Shopping & Hidden Gems
Shopping in Highland Park Village and Bishop Arts District — lots of local boutiques and charm. We’d spend the evening wandering Bishop Arts, stopping for dinner at Paradiso and ending with dessert at Emporium Pies.

Day 6 — Family Day
Since I’m always balancing work and family life, we’d include a day with my daughters — maybe visiting Dallas Arboretum, or catching a show at Dallas Children’s Theater, followed by ice cream at Botolino Gelato.

Day 7 — Brunch & Farewell
We’d end with a leisurely brunch at The Mansion on Turtle Creek — a Dallas classic — before saying our goodbyes.

What I love most about Dallas is how much heart and variety it offers — from world-class dining to small neighborhood gems, it’s a city that welcomes you in and invites you to make it your own.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Absolutely — I wouldn’t be where I am today without the unwavering support of my family. My parents were my first teachers in resilience, curiosity, and the value of hard work. When I showed an early interest in architecture as a child, they nurtured it in every way possible — even taking me to all their own design and construction meetings when they remodeled our home. That experience changed my life.

I’m also incredibly grateful to my husband and children. They are my daily inspiration and remind me constantly of the importance of designing homes that truly support and enhance family life.

Finally, I’ve been fortunate to have mentors and collaborators — both in New York and now in Dallas — who have generously shared their wisdom and experience. Building Purva Design Studio has been a collective effort, and I’m so thankful to the clients, builders, and creative partners who trust me to bring their visions to life.
