We had the good fortune of connecting with Phyllis Burchett and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Phyllis, is there a quote or affirmation that’s meaningful to you?
Comparison is the thief of joy. ~ Theodore Roosevelt

I’ve found there’s no joy in my life when I try to measure it with another. Sometimes hard to do with all that we have surrounding us these days but it’s up to me to use what God has given me to serve others. I can’t do that by looking at someone else and wishing or wanting what they have.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I think of myself as an artist first, then a photographer. I love the challenge of creating sellable art from my work. I was very blessed to have had a friend that introduced me to a company that now licenses my images for home décor. Although I do have a extensive library with this company including wildlife, nature and equine, it’s the horse that I specialize in.

Before I became a full-time photographer I was a professional horse trainer and also managed a large Equine Breeding Operation.

I now specialize in Photography Workshops and Retreats here in the United States. From horses on the beaches of St Augustine, Florida to ranch photography out west, there is something for everyone. My knowledge of horses help me to guide my clients to advance their careers in Equine Photography.

I also host an Equine Photo Tour to Iceland each year where we immerse ourselves in the Icelandic culture at the horse farm we stay at. I’m always excited about my next adventure!

I’m extremely fortunate that so many great opportunities have come my way to advance my career. The biggest challenge was taking advantage of the ones that best suited me. I find that each job is an opportunity to learn something new if you keep an open mind. It’s even possible you may find that you really enjoy something you never imagined would appeal to you.

Every person you meet along your path could be a door to a new opportunity. By finding a mentor to help you in your business and then being a mentor to other entrepreneurs you will gain so much. Never underestimate the power of networking!

I love this quote from Fran Dorf:

Remember that a job, even a great job or a fantastic career, doesn’t give your life meaning, at least not by itself. Life is about what you learn, who you are or can become, who you love and are loved by.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I love to show people ranch life, at real working cattle ranches. The day to day life of what it means to care for the land and the animals, the struggle, heartache and rewards that ranchers go through on a daily basis to survive. Most ranchers have multiple streams of income, such as a guest ranch, outfitter, horse breeding/training or some other type of business that will bring money in. Getting to know these people, sitting down to dinner with them, listening to their stories and living the lifestyle for a week is something I think everyone could benefit from.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
A big shoutout to my friend and mentor, Charles Needle who inspired me with his passion for photography and helped me to see things from a different perspective when I was just starting out on this journey.
