Meet Paull Blakeman | Writer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Paull Blakeman and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Paull, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
I think being authentic in your creative output and putting as much of yourself in your work as possible is the most important thing. If people sense inauthenticity, they usually run a mile. As a writer, I promote myself on my website and social media, so I try to post content that is aligned with my own values and interests – mostly the problems of being a writer, the books I’m reading, interests in the arts and theatre, and posting about Tarot and my interests in the Occult. I find that following and interacting with likeminded people is the best way to build a community who support and engage with your work.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Being a writer is perhaps a precarious and difficult vocation because it can sometimes feel like there is very little reward for a huge amount of effort. As a writer we often need to spend our time developing our craft and that can take hours and hours of disciplined work for usually no remuneration. That often means keeping down a job, too, and trying to write in the pockets of time we are able to carve out.
Writing is also a very solitary profession – it’s just you and a computer for much of the day, though the upside is you get to spend much of your time with characters you have created and who keep you very much entertained. Principally I am a prose writer trying to get a couple of unpublished manuscripts out into the world but the way I have managed success is by diversifying into poetry and non-fiction. Sales of my non-fiction Tarot book have very much kept me afloat and I love hearing from readers who have enjoyed my Tarot book and use it in their own readings.
My main goal in my writing career is to publish my two novels – one is a YA Romantasy and the other is a loose telling of a classical myth.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I have loved discovering Dallas and some of my favourite things to do have been:
– As a writer I love bookshops and my favourites are Deep Vellum, Half-Price Books, and Interbang
– Hearing a performance by Verdigris at the Hotel Swexan who have a wonderful bar and library
– The Dallas Art Museum is one of my favourite places to spend an afternoon taking in art and getting inspiration
– Deep Ellum is also one of my favourite places for food and I recently discovered Pecan Lodge ( I love BBQ)
– I would say my favourite bar is Bowen House though I also love the Meddlesome Moth

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I have been so fortunate to have a loving and supporting husband who has encouraged me to pursue my dreams and has, for a time, also supported me while I write and develop my craft, so I would definitely credit him!
