We had the good fortune of connecting with Patrice DaCosta and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Patrice, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I was actually born in the mortgage industry if you will. My mom did mortgage financing and had a couple of brokerage offices. She used to hate the support she had doing her client’s deals and begged me to come and work for her. I learned how to do the toughest deals first. Eventually a lender recruited me from her. Fast forward to now., I was working in operations and my sister got her mortgage license and kept telling me to get mine. I don’t like testing but eventually I thought how much better off can I be to be able to get my license, make better money and help people to finance and get into their homes, especially after developing myself In operations. I ended up learning the foundation first.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I think what sets me apart in my industry is the time I took to develop and learn the business. Working as a loan processor first and supporting sales allowed me to work directly with underwriters where I had to learn the guidelines to be able to guide the loan originators clients’ on what documentation to provide to ensure they get their approval and maintain their approval to close on time. I took my time in that development. The mortgage market crashed back in ‘07/‘08 and I decided I didn’t want to have to reinvent myself. Lenders shut down in the state of GA and getting a job became very difficult much less maintaining my level of income. I was a single mom at the time. I began to research where I could live and elevate in this business and still be able to take care of my children and so I moved a little across country by myself from GA to TX. That was the biggest challenge in my life for me. Not having any family here and re establishing myself but I was able to continue to get good paying work in my field at that time where it was so hard back in GA to get work.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I would definitely take them starting out in Fort Worth to the Stockyards. There they can experience the herd of TX Longhorn cattle and experience one of the best BBQ places in Fort Worth called Risky’s. Joe T Garcia’s in Fort Worth for great Texas Mexican margaritas and great food.
I would take them downtown as well to the Gort Worth Water Gardens. Then I would take them over into Dallas to experience the reunion tower where they can experience being on top of the city and enjoy the views for as far as the eyes can see…and enjoy some drinks.
I would take them to a great roof top bar.
I would take them to Kai in Plano for great Asian food and drinks
Spa castle would be a great spa experience or for a more quite vibe maybe the spa at the Joule in downtown Dallas

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Definitely, as mentioned previously for the foundation of how I got into this mortgage financing business is my mom. My sister is also the reason and one who influenced me to get my license. She ended up as a loan originator as well. I ended up getting a job that required me to get federally licensed and so I went ahead got licensed for my state so I could sell mortgage loans
