We had the good fortune of connecting with Nikki Smith and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Nikki, have there been any changes in how you think about work-life balance?
I think work balance is the hardest thing I have had to balance being a mom and owning a business. When I started the business 5 years ago I let it consume me completely- on the weekends, at night and really just around the clock. I was lucky to have that kind of time because at the beginning of this journey that’s what it took! Now, 5 years later, I have a 1 year old boy and another on the way. I have had to be ok with working limited hours and allowing my employees to grow and take care of things so I can be a good mom. It’s been the biggest challenge with my business but it’s also made me grow the most!
What should our readers know about your business?
I grew up in Minnesota, but have lived in Dallas for 10 years now! I moved here to work for JcPenney’s Headquarters and started making jewelry to wear to my corporate buying job! People at the office and around Dallas always complemented my jewelry, so I started selling it! After doing many pop up shops, art and music festivals, and setting up a tent at the Dallas Farmers Market on the weekends, I decided I could make the transition into doing something that I loved full time. 5 years later, we opened our first storefront at Dallas Farmer’s Market and we sell our jewelry to over 400 boutiques across the country! I am really proud of the storefront we recently opened. We use the front half to display jewelry and the backpart to make our pieces. We have made so many connections with people who love to shop local, or are traveling and loving seeing the small business scene of Dallas, it has truly been the perfect fit for us. We opened March 1st and closed the following week for 2 months due to the pandemic. The timing was scary, but our online sales, constant new designs and local ties to the community got us through the toughest months and we are currently going strong once again!
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Well, as you can tell by my last answer- I would certainly choose the Dallas Farmers Market on the weekend! There are so many small business to support, its my favorite part of the city! I would also take them to other unquie little pockets of Dallas such as deep ellum, bishop arts and Klyde Warren Park!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Shoutout to my employees who are the best! I have a baby and I am about to have another one- these girls have stepped up so much and are getting ready to do it again so I can live that mom life!
