We had the good fortune of connecting with Nikki Porteus and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Nikki, what’s the end goal, career-wise?
At the end of the day, I want to know that I helped create generational change in my community. By the end of my career I want to be doing this on a scale that is larger than myself. I envision this happening with two to three locations where there is a collaboration of holistic healthcare providers who each look at the person as a whole and work together to improve the health and wellbeing of individuals and families.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Renew & Restore Wellness is a family wellness chiropractic office, located in Southlake Texas, that I started in February of 2018. What sets us apart from a lot of chiropractic offices is that a large part of our patient base is pregnant women, children, and families. I am a Webster Certified and CACCP chiropractor, which is a specific training/certification that is specific to pregnant women and children.

Having worked for another chiropractor for over three years, during and after chiropractic school, I had learned a lot about chiropractic and the running of a practice, but nothing can fully prepare you for running your own business. As doctors of chiropractic, our education is focused on the human body and providing excellent care for our patients, not opening and successfully running a business. Along the way, I’ve definitely learned a lot through trial and error. From taxes, to phone systems, to practice management softwares, to websites, I’ve learned to wear many hats, but I’ve also learned when to delegate to a professional. I’m constantly learning and refining the skill of time management and have recently started focusing on the skill of leadership as I look to hire employees and bring in independent contractors.

More than anything, I want the world to know that at Renew & Restore Wellness we’re about encouraging and empowering people to take their health and wellbeing into their own hands. My hope is that by providing the care and guidance that I do for pregnant women, moms, dads and children, we can create better health outcomes which in-turn affects future generations to come.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I’m a big foodie, so a lot of their trip would probably evolve around meals. Something I love about the DFW area is that it is so culturally diverse, you can find practically every type of cuisine in the world, right in your backyard. Some Asian fusion from Trinity Street Food, Mexican food and margaritas at Mi Dia From Scratch, pizza at Cane Rosso, coffee at Native Coffee + Kitchen and some gluten free baked goods from Pinch of Salt Pastries would all be musts. We would grab drinks on the rooftop at Reata, in Fort Worth, and a cider tasting at Bishop Cider in Bishop Arts District. If the weather is nice, a hike at Cedar Hill Nature Preserve would be a great way to get in some exercise and fresh air. We would probably have to catch some live music and Texas two-stepping at Billy Bob’s and maybe a concert at House of Blues. I also love museums and the theater, so we’d probably try to get in a musical at Bass Hall or a visit to the Perot Museum. And last but not least, my husband is a Southlake firefighter and paramedic, so we’d have to go tour the station and say hi to all of the guys!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I honestly believe that where I am and who I am is a culmination of everything (good, bad, otherwise) that I’ve experienced up until this point. But, if I had to pinpoint one person who has been a constant presence throughout my story, it would have to be my dad. My dad has not only continually encouraged me to work hard and do my best with his words, but through his actions in his own personal life. Throughout my life, I’ve watched my dad work hard, earn the respect of others, and do the right thing, always. In my eyes, he is an example of a successful business owner who genuinely cares about the people who are a part of his team, as well as the communities that are impacted by it. There are also a few other people, who are more recent additions to my life, but no less important or impactful. My husband, Rodger, who is extremely supportive of my business goals and overall vision. My friend and mentor, Tina Philips, who is a business consultant with Sandler Training, in the sales training and leadership development industry, but gives her personal time to meet with me in order to review numbers and goals, as well as challenge me to grow and think outside the box. And another friend and coach, Angie Woods, of Stewarding Your Story, who helps me keep my mindset in check and encourages me to be the highest version of myself.
