We had the good fortune of connecting with Nick Payne and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Nick, what’s your definition for success?
I think success is just being the happiest version of yourself. Sure, money and status are pretty great, but I just want to be happy.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Since middle school, I have always wanted to make movies. Now that I’m finally finished with film school, I think I’m closer than I’ve ever been. I’ve always wanted to portray my own thoughts and feelings through a lens and be completely honest with my art. I think a big step in moving my career forward was getting the chance to work under Sam Raimi and his production company as an intern in Los Angeles for a semester. I learned so much about what it takes to translate your own ideas into a script during that time. Since then, a big challenge has just been keeping this passion going. There’s plenty of times when I’ll hit a wall and think that my work won’t cut it, but I just try to keep going and do the thing I love most. I definitely could have chosen a much easier path for my life, but creating is what makes me happy. Getting to create art is something that’s subjective and incredibly fun. I think the main thing I’ve learned so far is that everyone has their own story that only they can tell. It’s just a matter of finding that story.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I really want to shoutout my girlfriend, Raegan. She’s always incredibly supportive, kind, loving, bright, and inspirational. I think she helps me realize what’s really important.
