We had the good fortune of connecting with Ngozi Okoye and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Ngozi, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
It was totally a leap of faith to start it up during COVID-19 lockdown. Before then, I had been doing a bit of in-house baking for my family and the neighborhood, until a friend invited me to come join the Firewheel farmers market back in 2020.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’m a stay at home mom and enjoy indulging my kids with snacks I grew up on. Stepping out of the house to markets was quite challenging because I had never done anything like it before, but with the encouragement and guidance of others I eventually understood how the markets work ( I’m still learning too). One lesson I have learned is that every market day is different but it was my responsibility to make it as positive for me and the customers..A big smile always works! I would like my snacks to bring back pleasant memories of when they had once had them, also to leave first timers intrigued enough to return for more.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I will definitely be taking them to Ripley’s museum, the movies, flea markets and any Asian restaurant.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Firstly, God and my entire family have been so supportive of me. Also Emily Harris who introduced me to the world of farmers markets.
