We had the good fortune of connecting with Nevadra Johnson and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Nevadra, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
My husband Terrence and I have always been entrepreneurs. We owned a mortgage company and several other ventures during our marriage. So starting our own business has always been in our blood so-to-speak.

Regarding Nae Nae’s Naturals and starting this company, that all kind of happened by accident. It was never my dream to create a beauty brand or a product. Nae Nae’s Naturals just kind of fell into my lap. My three younger children battled with eczema and dry itchy scalp. I went looking for a natural remedy because the steroid creams were costly and not healthy in the long run. I researched for years and played around with different natural products. I lived in my local herb shop, testing different combinations of herbs, ointments and essential oils to try to find just the right mixture of ingredients to get my children off the prescription creams and onto something natural.

After two years of testing I finally came up with a combination cream that not only alleviated their eczema, it also healed my childrens skin. We noticed another unpredictable side effect – the cream I made caused their hair to grow longer, thicker and healthier. After sharing it with local friends and family, we saw them get the same results. Terrence convinced me to let him market it to his social media following and the rest is history.

Terrence and I used our years of experience to figure out how to create, grow, organize and advertise Nae Nae’s Naturals into what it is today. Our thought process has always been about making a way for our family to work and thrive together, which is what we continue to accomplish through Nae Nae’s Naturals.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I love to discuss my professional background because it proves that anyone with a dream can succeed. My background is in Accounting. I do not have any degrees or licensing in chemistry, cosmetology, etc.. I am a mom who saw a need that was not being met and I decided to fill that gap. I also do not come from a wealthy family and did not rely on investors or any money from outside sources to get Nae Nae’s Naturals started. My children raised Nae Nae’s Naturals seed money from a lemonade stand. I am most proud of the fact that I was able to provide a healthy product for my children while including them in the company and the success that is Nae Nae’s Naturals.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I love being home with my family. We all spend time with each other, cook together, watch movies together and hang out. For a week long visit with me, plan on spending time with the kids, attending many high school sports practices and games, and hanging out with my sister and niece. I love Starbucks and we often run into Chipotle for lunch. The DC area is full of interesting places to go, including the African-American History Museum. We also would go check out some Go-Go in the area.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I dedicate this shoutout to my husband, Terrence, who is the driving force behind getting me to market Nae Nae’s Naturals flagship product, Hair Boost.

Without his enthusiasm and support I would not be the success I am today!
