We had the good fortune of connecting with Nate Allen and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Nate, why did you pursue a creative career?
I pursued a creative career because I felt like there was no other route for me. I love telling and creating stories, and I realized that was what I’m best at. Art is an unbelievably powerful tool, and I think we as artists have a responsibility to use our talents to create art and release it to the world.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’m a Writer and Director from the Boston Area, now working in Savannah, GA. I began with creating small-budget/concept short films while practicing and sharpening my craft. After 4 years of mild success in short films, I finally embarked on my largest creative project to date, my feature film. With Roger Almeida, we co-wrote and directed, “Bonsai”, a coming-of-age drama about mental health in high schools. Bonsai was an incredible creative experience and has won awards and been selected in several film festivals across the country. It’s now available to rent or buy on amazon prime video. Now I am writing and directing numerous projects while attending SCAD for film and television. My new short film, “Tell Me Everything”, will be released soon. I am dedicated to telling unique and unexpected stories about what it means to be Human. I usually focus on specific themes around humanity, mental health, and trauma. I believe in stories of growth, and change, and my work reflects that.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If my friend was visiting Savannah I would start with the music. Savannah has a rich and beautiful history of jazz within its city, and it’s still very much alive today. I would take my friends to various jazz clubs, and to river walk where there is often jazz being played. In terms of food, I would have them check out Hueys, Java Burrito, Two Birds ( A great greek pop-up stand ), and probably some good BBQ.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Anything I’ve ever made has been because of countless people’s involvement, so there are too many to name. But to start I have to thank my parents, Emily and David, who have supported my creative pursuits without question and have let me grow into who I am today. I’d also like to thank my High school film club teachers Daniel Brennan, and Sara Antonakos who have supported my high-concept projects and have taught me invaluable lessons about filmmaking and the craft. And lastly, I’d be remiss without thanking my writing and directing partner of my feature film “Bonsai”, Roger Almeida. Roger is the reason Bonsai became what it was and is the best Creative collaborator I have and will ever work with.
