We had the good fortune of connecting with Natalie Fuson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Natalie, how has your perspective on work-life balance evolved over time?
I have often struggled with feeling “balanced” as a person who loves to work and has a tendency towards being a work-acholic. It wasn’t until more recently, 7+ years into owning my own business, that I came to terms with the fact that there is no simple formula for achieving “perfect balance”. Each and every day looks different in order to achieve a balanced feeling – some days are heavier on work, other are heavier on play. Feeling balanced looks more fluid than the rigid picture that is often portrayed.
For me, feeling balanced is more about learning to prioritize. I like to ask myself, “what absolutely has to get done today?” and do those items first which includes things like house-chores and taking time for myself as a human in addition to work-related responsibilities. Something that has stuck with me the past few years is picturing all of the tasks you are juggling as balls, some are plastic and some are glass. The key is to know which are glass, because those would shatter if dropped whereas the plastic would bounce and could be picked up at another time.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
As a designer, I am definitely known for my love of color. In the last 12+ years as a designer, while I’ve worked in many different types of design (product design, graphic design, interior design, pattern design, the list goes on and on), through it all, I’ve become known for my passion for color, playful details and well-thought-out design.
I find joy in marrying a message with meticulous design details and bringing a story to life visually. Nowadays, I use those passions in two different ways – graphic design services that serve both local businesses and national brands and an adorable online stationery and gift shop including notepads, pens, journals and other colorful goodies for your desk.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I have always loved hopping around in the Trinity Groves area – it’s such a casual location for hanging out on a beautiful day and trying various types of food and drinks. I’m also fond of any of the Katy Trail Ice House locations and visiting Klyde Warren park during the spring or fall.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Author Nora Roberts, she is the one who related our tasks to glass or plastic balls and that quote has forever changed my outlook on achieving balance.
