We had the good fortune of connecting with Nash Bayoud and Taylor Springett and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Nash & Taylor, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
My partner, Taylor, and I were shopping online for eco friendly clothing a few years ago. Everything we found looked like…oatmeal. The endlessly bland colors and designs we kept finding inspired us to create what we wanted to see in the world: fun & colorful fashion that did not harm the planet and the people on it.

What should our readers know about your business?
Turning Tides is a Queer-owned, American-made sustainable brand of fashion and home goods, equipped with an online resource center educating others on how to live a more sustainable and less harmful lifestyle. We give artists who work with eco friendly materials a space to sell their items and collaborate with like-minded creators.

Creating Turning Tides has not been easy. Starting a business is difficult, but starting a business during a pandemic is incredibly taxing. Taylor and I wake up everyday with pieces of doubt swirling amongst our confidence. We mostly choose to stay within the light, but sometimes those doubts grow. Luckily, when one of us is doubting, the other is usually feeling positively! I want the world to know that they should never quit. Even when you think no one likes your work, even when you don’t make a sale for MONTHS, know that your work is still valuable. The right audience will come around.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If my best friend was visiting, I would take them to Company Cafe for brunch, to Boulevardier for afternoon oysters, to La Tropezienne for afternoon coffee and pastries, dinner at Blue Sushi for sushi that was raised and caught responsibly, and then to dance at It’ll Do!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My Co-Founder, my partner in life and business, Taylor, deserves the most recognition. Not only has she inspired me every waking minute of my life since we met, but she believes in me like no one else has. Taylor is my biggest supporter, my most loyal friend, and my favorite person on this planet.
