We had the good fortune of connecting with Nabor Godoy and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Nabor, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
It all started in 2009 after I got my MBA and worked in the corporate world, where I saw how much someone’s image impacts their success. But financial analysis wasn’t lighting me up, so I shifted gears and followed my passion for photography.
I’ve always enjoyed talking to people—I’m talkative—so when I switched to photography, I quickly realized how much I loved working with clients and making them feel comfortable in front of the camera. There’s something fascinating about human expressions and body language—how just a tiny gesture or look can change the vibe of an image. Steve McCurry’s work has always inspired me—he captures raw emotion in every shot.
Around the same time, I met my wife, Laura, who’s a total doer. Together, we created Godoy Shots.
You never really know how things will turn out, but sometimes, you must go for it. There were moments when I had to take a step back before moving forward, and that’s all part of the process. When COVID-19 hit, we were in San Francisco, and it was tough—we had to close two studios. Instead of seeing it as a setback, we saw it as an opportunity, moved to Dallas, and started fresh. That challenge pushed us to think outside the box and adapt, which was a great decision. Every risk has taught me something valuable; without them, I wouldn’t be where I am today. It’s all part of the journey; we haven’t looked back since!
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I totally get it—like many of my clients, I don’t always feel comfortable in front of a camera either. That’s why I focus so much on making sure they feel understood and at ease. I’ve picked up on reading body language over the years, which really helps me guide people during a session. It’s about knowing what they want, helping them relax, and combining that with the proper lighting and expression coaching to nail that perfect shot.
What sets me apart? I really aim to create a comfortable experience. More than just getting a great photo, I want my clients to leave the studio feeling empowered and confident. It’s fantastic to see how the images we create together can boost their self-esteem and help them in their careers—that drives me daily!
Honestly, the journey hasn’t always been easy. Starting had its challenges, especially when we had to close two studios during COVID. But instead of seeing it as a setback, we took it as a chance to rethink things and rebuild.
I want people to know that with Godoy Shots, we’re not just snapping pictures. We’re helping people tell their story and feel proud of their image. That’s what it’s really all about!
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I’d take my friend to the Fort Worth Stockyards to see the cattle drive and explore the historic district. We’d grab a drink at Second Rodeo, where the atmosphere is lively. Then, it’s time for some classic Texas BBQ at Hard Eight—seriously, those briskets and ribs are incredible! To top it all off, we’d indulge in some delicious pie at Emporium Pies on Bishop Avenue. It’d be a week packed with fantastic food and great times!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
First, my dad—he passed away two years ago, but he was always my biggest supporter. When I made the decision to leave the financial world and pursue photography, he backed me all the way and encouraged me to follow my passion. I owe a lot to his belief in me.
Of course, my wife, Laura, deserves a huge amount of credit. She’s believed in me from day one and has been my right hand in building our business. I couldn’t do this without her.
Lastly, photographers like Steve McCurry, Joe McNally, and Peter Hurley, among many others, have been constant sources of inspiration. Their incredible work has challenged me to improve with every shot I take. Each of them has pushed me to think differently and grow as a photographer.
