We had the good fortune of connecting with Monique Brewer and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Monique, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
My thoughts were: single parents need community, that we shouldn’t be doing this journey alone and how can I best serve that vision. Single parents need more than just resources and opportunities they need educational resources AND funding to help bridge the gaps. She shouldn’t have to basically be homeless in order to receive financial assistance.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I have 22 years of operation management, coaching and developing a team of people while improving processes. It was not easy in this career journey raising 2 children especially once I moved to Texas in 2008 because I was alone at that time…at least physically I was because I most definitely had my family on speed dial. Overcoming challenges looked liked, praying, really abiding in His presence and meditating on scripture as well as calling my mom and sisters what seemed like EVERYDAY lol. Lessons learned: I’ve learned a ton but if I had to choose….stay consistent, remember your why, self-care and therapy are important and surround yourself with community. Positive community that will lift you up, push you forward and hold space for you in those difficult moments. I want the world to know, specifically those traveling this single parent journey alone is that you don’t have to do this alone, get involved in your community, your church, your children’s school or join our community at Parent2Parent Cafe’ to connect with other parents. It gets better, if you’re struggling or in a hard place now, this is only a season.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I don’t really have specifics off the top of my head, but I do have a long list of restaurants and places to get a nice crafted cocktail I’d like to try saved in my phone.😊 I fly by the seat of my pants most times so I’ll just a few options for the girls. One of the things I like to do are trying classes that make candles, perfumes or lipstick. I’d probably have a farmers market someone on the list, along with a spot to hear some live jazz. I would have to add an outside exhibit of some kind, of course depending upon the weather. Additionally, I’m not stuck on a specific just any city within 30, maybe 45 mins from where friends may be staying so that could be from Dallas, to Arlington to Frisco.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, my parents, my 7 siblings and my auntie Val. They are my village and my support system, the reason for who I am today.
