We had the good fortune of connecting with Mollie Herrera and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Mollie, can you tell us more about your background and the role it’s played in shaping who you are today?
I grew up in Denton. I spent a lot of my teenage years near the square/downtown because of the local skating rink, Spinning Wheels. I started competitively speed skating at age 12. It required a lot of travel, time and training. Skating has impacted my life entirely and has brought me to be where I am today. I have always loved being active and i’ve always been into music, so combining the two made me fall in love with indoor cycling. When I started to entertain the idea of opening up my own fitness studio, I knew it had to be in Denton.

What should our readers know about your business?
Sometimes fitness studios can be intimidating. Working out can be a very vulnerable act, so any kind of comfortable atmosphere is much needed. Here at Denton Spin Company, we practice inclusion and community. We welcome everyone, no matter what their fitness level is. This was super important to me when building the brand and getting the studio up and running. I am most proud to say that everything I saw in my vision is coming true. The members that come through the studio feel the inclusivity, the community and the warmth of our staff. It’s truly unreal to experience. I’d have to say the hardest challenge when starting up the business was resources for start-ups in general. A lot of folks think the SBA can help when in fact, you have to be up and running for a couple years to receive any assistance. I was very fortunate to have a lot of resources from my investors and my business partner to get me where I am today.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I love being a tour guide in Denton! I believe that Denton is a hidden gem in the DFW area that so many people aren’t aware of and MUST experience. I would start off by taking my friend for breakfast at Seven Mile Cafe. They have delicious food and so many options no matter what your dietary restrictions may be. Next, we would go walk around The Square in Downtown Denton. The historic courthouse is beautiful and all the surrounding local businesses are awesome. I love walking through the mini mall and checking out the vintage t-shirt and printing shop, Norman Roscoe. You can’t forget to get a sweet treat and the BEST ice cream around at Beth Marie’s Old-Fashioned Ice Cream. For lunch, I would highly recommend Denton Independent Hamburger Company, just off the square. Their burgers are so good, they melt in your mouth. One of my favorite coffee spots is Golden Boy Coffee. The aesthetic in there alone is amazing. Their cold brew is the best in town! Next would be drinks and a place to hangout which would be at my favorite spot, Eastside. They have an outdoor patio and food truck park. ALL of the food trucks are delicious, my personal favorite is The Saucy Hibachi. An outdoor patio means lots of dogs and who doesn’t love to pet a dog. Finally, I’d end my tour at the best dinner place in town, Komodo Loco. It is an asian-fusion cuisine and so fresh. I go here every chance I get. Denton loves supporting local!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
There are so many people I have to credit for this journey, the list is unreal. I have an amazing support system of people that I have met along the way in my life through skating and teaching fitness. The coolest part is that I have people (now friends) that have stuck by my side from the very beginning when I started teaching cycle at 24 Hour Fitness in Addison. The biggest push of motivation was by a group of close friends that I worked with at an indoor cycling studio most recently in 2020. They became my family. They brought out the best in me and helped me grow. Without those amazing humans, I couldn’t have had the extra push I needed to open up my own studio. My partner in life, Joel and my family have been by my side showing their unconditional love and support the entire way.
