We had the good fortune of connecting with Mira Cassidy and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Mira, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I started my own business because I had the desire to have something that was mine, something that I created and crafted. Also, I had this strong urge to simply make sure that I always felt free. Freedom is so important to me because I know what it’s like to be caged in or in a constant cycle of unhappiness that’s not improving.
What I mean is as a survivor of domestic violence I know what it’s like to have a job that doesn’t fulfill you and you are only there because as a mom it works for your life, and then you go home and you’re abused by the one person who is supposed to protect you, love you, and be a source of comfort. This is really how being a survivor of domestic violence molded me. I wanted to be an entrepreneur and I wanted to feel free and build something that I am proud of. I wanted to have a business that allows me to help others and one that reflects the values I hold dear.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I like to say that my pencil is my paintbrush. Mira Cassidy LLC is all about using all of my unique talents and abilities and using that ability to write and speak artistically to inspire, educate, and encourage people. As a writer, I’m trying to get the reader to see a clear picture. When I’m performing a monologue, the way I move and gesture is all to push out creativity and connect with the audience to teach, help and inspire. The goal is for my readers and audience to feel and have an emotional connection.
This journey has been far from easy. First and foremost, you are always learning something new and finding out that doing something this way or that way would have worked a little better. As a solopreneur, you wear a lot of different hats. However, it’s worth it. The biggest lesson I’ve learned along the way is to shut that voice up inside that tells you that you can’t or it’s too hard. There is a way, there is a path. Get out there and find the information you need to make it happen and get to work.
I would like for the world to know that I had the courage to walk away from an abusive relationship with someone that I loved. Was it a healthy love? No. Did I receive real love? No. However, I loved him and was in it for over 18 years and got out because that relationship was destroying me mentally, emotionally, physically, spiritually, and psychologically. From that pain, I became Mira Cassidy and started to heal myself, learn, grow, and help others. So, I hope to be seen and remembered as a well-rounded balanced good woman who tried her very best to do good things.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Indianapolis is really a nice place to live. I would love to take someone to see all of the street art that contributes to the African American experience. I would love to show someone the Walker Theatre which was founded in 1927 and was the factory of Madam CJ Walker. Then there is Jazz on the Ave, the library, and the art museum. There are so many wonderful restaurants. I’d like to have someone experience Midwest eating.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I have to give a huge shoutout to all my NAWBO Indy sisters that have helped me by being a source of encouragement, connecting me to resources, providing tools for my success, seeing my potential and holding me accountable, and simply believing in my dreams and helping me to appreciate that all I seek to do within reason will happen. I just have to put in consistent effort.
