We had the good fortune of connecting with Mike Smith and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Mike, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
When my grandmother, who was a cook all of her life passed away on March 11, 2019, I wanted to do something to let the world know who she was as a cook. Tea cakes was one of the many things we would cook together since I was a young boy. It just feels right

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Betty T’s Tea Cakes, LLC is a web-based business that offers over 10 different flavors of tea cakes in our regular, mini, and bite sizes. Our tea cakes are homemade and made fresh to order daily, and we offer nationwide shipping and local delivery in the Grand Prairie and Arlington area. With our product being easily accessible to the entire nation, and the different sizes and flavors to choose from, I believe sets us apart from any of our competitors. Not to mention the out of this world taste along with the soft and fluffy texture of our tea cakes is unmatched.

Along the way I have learned that build a brand from the ground up is not an easy task. You have to constantly think of ways to improve your brand and your products to keep your current clientele while attracting new ones.

I hope to grow my business to a level that would allow the world to get a glimpse into who my grandmother was as a cook.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
One of the first places I would take my friend would be to eat and listen to live music at Buttons in Fort Worth. I love the food and atmosphere. I would also make sure that we would check out The House of Blues

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
First, I would like to shout out to God for allowing me to share time and space with the beautiful woman I called grandmama. As I look back it’s almost as if she was preparing me my whole life for this moment. Without her I would not be doing what I am doing.

Secondly, I would like to shout out Clarissa Gunter-Brooks, who was the first customer I had. She saw a post I made on Facebook about making Tea Cakes for my family, and asked me how much would I sell her 8 dozen tea cakes for. Because of her continued support and encouragement I decided to make it official and register my business.

Lastly, I would like to shout out my wife for always encouraging me when I feel like things aren’t going the way I want them to. It’s nice to have someone who believes in you no matter what.
