We had the good fortune of connecting with Mike Bacile and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Mike, can you share a quote or affirmation with us?
It is not about the number until you get what it is about; then it is all about the number. In short, this is a purpose-driven statement that I have used for my business and personal/family life. Anyone can start a business. Many can build a lifestyle business even. But few can build an enterprise business that is bigger than themselves. This statement is a constant reminder of the reason why I get up and work so hard to build my business. It is about providing a better life for my employees. It is about creating other entrepreneurs around the globe through training. It is about making an impact with children that I will never know. Money is easy to make once you know how. Making an impact in the world is a much bigger purpose.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
The Daily Java / King’s Coffee Company is a wholesale distributor of equipment and products to independent cafes and churches all across America. However, it did not start that way or with that vision. In 1995, I owned a small advertising business and had an opportunity to do something in the up-and-coming coffee business selling espresso machines. I thought it would be a good side hustle, so I started The Daily Java. By 1999, The business had grown so much that I sold my advertising business and started focusing more on adding products to our offerings. However, when the crash came in 2009, we had to do a hard reset. I sold the big house, we cut the country club membership, and went back to the basics. I had just joined EO a couple of years before, so I used my forum (a small group of EO members that meet every month) to develop a new strategy moving forward. From there, The Daily Java started focusing on supporting churches building cafes all across the US. Soon, we were being published and speaking at church conventions. Others were labeling us the Church Coffeehouse Experts and with good reason. We developed a 25 Steps to Success Program for churches as well as Independent cafes. In 2017, we finally brought roasting in-house and started King’s Coffee Company.
It was during the struggle of 2009 that I found our purpose. I figured out that business was not only about making money but I need a Why? Once I found my purpose, the rest of the puzzle just fell into place. We have still had many challenges over the years, but we continue to grow and, more importantly, we continue it make visible impacts in the lives of people around us. Many of our churches are using their coffee proceeds to feed and clothe children, both locally and abroad. We call this our Coffee With a Purpose Program. Currently, we believe our churches are impacting over 20,000 lives per week, and every week that number grows. That is what drives me and my team.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
We would have to start with some coffee at my showroom so they could see what we do and have some of the best coffee in the city :). From there, we would head down to the Bishop Arts District to walk around and drink more coffee at places like Brewed LTD and grab a late breakfast at Oddfellows or if it is already lunchtime, we would eat at Eno’s for a great pizza or Paradiso for the great atmosphere. Once done, we would head up to Whiterock lake to rent bikes and loop the lake or just head straight into the Arboretum to get a better feel of East Dallas and why it is the best place in Dallas to live in my opinion.
I am sure after that they would probably need another coffee and would want to do some window shopping. Though NorthPark is the obvious choice, the best window shopping in Dallas is Highland Park Village. Even better, we could get a coffee or bottle of wine along with some good eats from Blue Grocer, Bird, Mi Cocina, or The Honor Bar.
As we moved into the evening and once we are refreshed, we would start with drinks at RH Rooftop bar before heading to Nick and Sam’s or Town Hearth for a great steak and great wine. We would cap the evening off with a night cap at home out on the deck by the fire pit in true Texas fashion.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I have too many people to individually recognize and thank for my success. But if I was forced to pick the top 2, it would be:
1) My wife, Suzanne, for her endless love and support. She has always been the balance of sanity to my storm of entrepreneurial crazy. Never once in 26+ years has she ever not backed me in good times and bad times.
2) Entrepreneur’s Organization (EO) has provided me the foundation and on-going support on what it means to be a “successful” entrepreneur. Being able to share and learn from other highly successful entrepreneurs that have gone through what I have, has been an incredible blessing in my life. My business and my personal wellness are where they are today because of my journey with EO.
