We had the good fortune of connecting with Micharl Demi’ Moorehead and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Demi’, why did you pursue a creative career?
This is what i was called to do. I’m not your typical “play by the rules” type of girl. My family and friends will tell you in a heartbeat “Demi’ marches to the beat of her own drum” lol. Its true! I like doing what I want and not being told what to do. I mean seriously, haven’t you ever felt that way? I went to college and I’ve had great career opportunities but I was always unhappy. Either the pay was an issue or the hours or the supervisor. Working for someone else just wasn’t ME. I say becoming a braider/loctician is my calling because as long as I can remember as a child I used to line up my dolls and comb their hair daily. I guess in a sense I was preparing my self for for the life I was destined to live. So ultimately why did I leave a 6 year career to pursue entrepreneurship? I walked away because It makes me happy to do something I love. My mama always said “If you do something you love, you’ll never work a day in your life.” I’m truly blessed to have found it.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I first taught myself to braid at the young age of 7. Yes! I have that much experience, but I lacked passion as a kid. Braiding hair was just something I could do and as hard as it might be to believe, I actually hated it. Who’d thought the one thing I claim to hate would make me the happiest person because as it turns out, it’s what I LOVE! I always seem to find myself saying the statement “If you wanna make God laugh, tell him your plan” because its funny how life works out sometimes. Honestly my passion for braiding and locking hair sets me apart from others because I literally quit my job to pursue entrepreneurship. The day I decided to walk away from a 6 year career was the day I discovered I have a huge passion for what I do.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I love the outdoors. Being outside in the fresh air is perfect for me. My top two favorite hangout spots in Dallas would be Tolliers Patio and Happiest Hour.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Of course my creator because with out God none of this would even be possible. My Husband Eric T. Thank you for believing in me, your many sacrifices and the unconditional love you shown me. My son Eric M. for simply being the light of my life and my human manikin lol. My business partner and friend Latoyia for pushing me to be great and showing me that black women can work together and succeed. Last but not least, my family and close friends. Thank you for being my first and forever clients. I love you all dearly.
