We had the good fortune of connecting with Michael DiCroce and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Michael, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
Risk management is key for any entrepreneur to be successful. Fear of loss is often the most crippling thing that keeps most good ideas from ever coming to market.
I was involved in 3 other fitness start ups that all failed before we created Wild Warrior Nutrition. Each one of those had unique risks that we overlooked, and that destroyed us early in the process. After all those failures I learned that managing risk requires careful planning and understanding the different variables that will either contribute to us being successful or cause us to lose money. This includes taking the time to understand our customers, their needs, and the things they are asking for.
While I am a fan of leverage, a big mistake I made early in my career was going into debt on products where we had not done adequate due diligence. This caused us to launch products that failed quickly and left us with debt that limited our growth. Today we often try out products that are fully paid for in small batches, then if they succeed, we know we have something that can be scaled.
My philosophy on managing risk also involves keeping a long term mindset, rather than trying to strike gold overnight. Growing a business 25-30% a year is easy to manage. Scaling too quickly creates all kinds of unforeseen risks and costs, so we try hard to eliminate anything associated with “get rich quick” out of our business. While our end goal is to build an recognizable international brand, we are in no hurry for that to happen.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
At Wild Warrior Nutrition our goal is to provide our customers with a wide array of super-foods, herbs, and supplements to help them achieve optimal health and elite fitness.
In the early years we only sold raw Pine Pollen, which is insanely nutrient dense and one of the only foods that contains phyto-androgen hormones. That was so successful that we began looking at other complimentary products that our customers were requesting. This included a multi-herbal formula for men, grass-fed beef organs, and a new formula designed to help support normal healthy “Drive” if you know what I mean.
Our goal is to eventually have a complete portfolio of products that can address every nutrition need and desire, including healthier coffee creamers, meal replacements, herbs, and other nutritional supplements.
While our core competency is super-foods, we view Wild Warrior Nutrition as a lifestyle and fitness company. Through our blog and YouTube channel, we work hard to provide our customers with free health and fitness information that they can use to develop better habits that will improve their lives.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Our company is based in Colorado, so no trip here would be complete without a visit to the Rocky Mountains. We are blessed to be minutes from endless hiking trails, lakes, and other great places to relax. My personal favorite is to take an annual retreat to Keystone Colorado, where I enjoy taking long mountain bike rides and hikes with my family. This always provides the reset I need to purge myself of the ongoing stress of running a growing supplement company.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Unlike a lot of entrepreneurs that are discouraged by friends and family, I have been blessed with a lot of good mentors that have encouraged my ideas and provided a TON of sound advice, even when things were not going well. This includes Isabel Solis from Isabel Solis art, my mentor Gabriel Ayala, my parents, and all of our hard working employees that believe real food and high intensity exercise are the key to fixing our world’s health crises.
I would also like to thank Animal Ability’s Jim Smith, along with Kevin Rail and Jill Parente from My Inferno Body for helping to provide our Wild Warriors with great workouts and fitness tips.
