We had the good fortune of connecting with Meredith Holser and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Meredith, how do you think about risk?
I view risk as a tool I can use to make myself better, whether it be in my personal life or my photography career. Taking a risk to me means that I get to try something new, learn from the experience and familiarize myself with how I work in certain situations. Oftentimes fear has kept me from taking opportunities that could advance my photography career, but I have to remind myself that discomfort can only make me stronger mentally and skill-wise. Risk taking has allowed me to feel more confident in my photo work because when I am able to overcome my fears about a new assignment and just do it anyway, I come away from each experience with new knowledge about how to navigate future plans. It’s just like they say, if you never try, you’ll never know.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My interest in photography began when my mom and I went on a girl’s trip to Asheville, NC to see the Biltmore Estate. She let me take her iPhone 5 around the grounds and I remember being so fascinated with its focus capabilities. This fascination with capturing pretty scenes and memories manifested into my high school yearbook career, where I discovered photojournalism, which took me to college. This is where I’ve learned the most about the technical side of photography as well as my identity as a photographer. I’m proud of the both the documentary projects I’ve produced as well as the more art photography work I’ve made during my time at UNT. Every assignment and project has taught me to keep pushing despite feeling unmotivated and stuck. I strive to create more creative portrait work throughout this new year as well as learn and have fun with new mediums like film.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I feel lucky to have a handful of local friends who are photographers, artists, filmmakers, writers, etc. The creative community that’s fostered through these friends as well as the power social media have played a big role in keeping me motivated in times of creative burnout and encouraged me to try new things so it’s only right they get a shoutout. Overall, anyone who’s ever helped me with a shoot, passed along assignments, shared my work or given words of motivation has a special place in my heart. You know who you are!
