Meet Melissa Garrett | Psychic

We had the good fortune of connecting with Melissa Garrett and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Melissa, maybe we can start at the very start – the idea – how did you come up with the idea for your business?
I have always been a very creative person- I can barely rest my mind sometimes. I initially thought that having a small Etsy business would be a great way to get some extra income, and as I was very into making wreaths at the time, I decided to launch Wyrd Wreath Studio. Going to craft stores, thrift shops and garage sales always gave me so many great wreath ideas, but I found that there was little interest in them and that they were hard to ship.
Once I started learning how to make things from resin and my partner decided to try her hand at 3D printing, the possibilities as to what I could make became endless. She taught me all about how to use the printer and create designs through Tinkercad.
I absolutely love all things metaphysical, but I also love fashion and do a lot of modeling, Thoughts of combining those concepts into a “metaphysical chic” business came to mind gradually, and I started taking notes as to what types of jewelry designs I liked whenever I went shopping, I learned how to design and 3D print things that were even better than the things I would see in stores!

What should our readers know about your business?
Having the idea to turn my small concept into a full on business was pretty intimidating at first. I knew a thing or two about how to start a business from what my entrepreneur friends have gone through, but other than that I had to learn everything fresh. There was SO much to consider from where I would rent a space, how I would take payments, what type of marketing to do, and more, but the more I realized how unhappy I was working jobs where I felt undervalued, the more I wanted to take a leap of faith.
I felt like I could really be successful because my concept is just so different- when you think psychic studios and metaphysical stores, there are a few aesthetics that come to mind, but I don’t think any of them are quite like mine. I am happiest around the color pink and I also love cheesy Halloween and psychic themed decor, so I just went with it! I often say that at Wyrd & Whimsy, I put the “chic” in psychic by offering a place to get your fortune told or a reiki session, while also offering some fun and fashionable products afterward. What could be better than getting to shop after you’ve cleared your chakras?
I don;t think that there is another place in DFW where you can order custom 3D printed metaphysical items, and I certainly don’t hear much about studios that offer readings done with rune stones as an alternative to tarot. Having that option to offer my clients is very important to me. I gained interest in runes due to my nordic ancestry, and learning how to read them is something that I feel very proud of. It is a very unique service that I can offer, and I use runes that I created myself out of resin during my readings.
I hope that I can make people feel less reluctant about getting psychic readings and energy healings by offering a unique environment and perspective on the metaphysical world. I consider my studio a judge free zone and safe space for anyone wanting to learn more about the metaphysical, or who just wants a safe and welcoming place in general to visit. I email all of my clients and guests an intake form so that they can tell me how to make their visit the most comfortable. I ask questions such as what type of lighting they prefer, whether or not they have a problem with candles/incense/certain smells, or other sensory triggers. Everyone should feel welcome in my studio!

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
My favorite place in Dallas is the Cidercade- I’m a big arcade game fan, so the fact that I can stay all day and play as many games and pinball as I want is awesome. They also have some really great cider. I love to go there and then to Delucca’s where you can try slices of unique pizzas (every style they offer is to die for, but the Nutella pizza is my favorite)

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I definitely could not have done this without my partner Jessica- she is the one who taught me how to 3D print, and has been extremely supportive of my dream to open a psychic studio and retail space. She helped me set up my beautiful office and has done more than I could ever thank her enough for. My friend Azmina Pirani has been such an inspiration for me. She owns a mobile hot cocoa and drink bar called Snug Mug, and she is also very much into all things metaphysical. I was very inspired to start my own business seeing how determined she is and how she is always chasing her dreams. She truly is someone who is such a hard worker and deserves all the success in the world.
Also, my mom and my friend Esther have been there for me along the way, and have kept me level headed when I’ve had any doubts on my mind. The people in my life rock and I love them!
