We had the good fortune of connecting with Melina Mayfield and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Melina, how has your work-life balance changed over time?
When you own your own business work life balance can be challenging. Everything, all the responsibility falls on you. If something doesn’t get done in time it is completely on you. It can all be very time consuming and overwhelming. You have to make time for the things outside of the business you want to accomplish. Which is the upside of having your own business. Instead of being constrained by the hours of a traditional 9-5 job. I can elect to work on things later in the evening to give me more time with my family. Or when I need a break, I can select dates I don’t want to accept clients to allow for vacation time. Although, entrepreneurship is highly demanding making sure you maintain a good work life balance is key.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Event Decor is very much a word of mouth industry so a big part of what keeps me busy is networking! Outside of designing beautiful custom curated events for our clients we attend Bridal Expos, collaborate on styled shoots, and participate in various networking and social organizations. There are so many facets and aspects to business that are so much more than what you produce or sell. Another thing that keeps us busy are our monthly and weekly floral subscriptions. We deliver to residential and business customers all over the DFW metroplex who want fresh floral arrangements to brighten up their work space or home.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If their visit started on the weekend we would definitely head over to Trinity Groves to visit Soirée Coffee bar to enjoy the delicious brunch prepared by Brunchaholics (I’d suggest the soul food tacos). Next, we’d visit historic Dealey plaza to see the JFK memorial and swing by Deep Ellum to grab a slice of Serious Pizza, or enjoy one of the other many eateries in the area, and snap some pics in front of the many murals. The next day we’d probably do a little shopping in Highland Park, which houses some of my favorite stores. For dinner we could go to True Kitchen and Cocktails to grab a delectable peach D’Usse margarita. For drinks we would go to Nick& Sam’s or for some sights we would go to the top of the reunion tower observation deck to get a great view of the city to name a few things.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would like to dedicate my shoutout to God. My faith and trust in him has made all I have accomplished possible and has allowed it to be more than what I could ever imagine. My husband and mother also deserve a little credit. They are my support system through it all. They’ve believed in me at times when I didn’t believe in myself.
