We had the good fortune of connecting with Megan Vanderslice and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Megan, what habits do you feel play an important role in your life?
The Habits that have helped me succeed are a positive attitude, work ethic, and consistency. I have turned my dream into my career. Sometimes I work multiple 18 hour days without a break. Sometimes we don’t get much sleep or even a meal. If I’m not smiling at the end of these days, then it wouldn’t be worth it. Just being grateful and happy have helped me go a long way.
Having a strong work ethic has helped me succeed. My father and brother taught me the importance of hard work. You can have a lot of talent, but if you don’t put it to work, nothing will come together. I have Always been willing to go the extra mile to achieve my goals.
Horse training is a very long process. There’s no way to cut corners or speed it up. Consistency is so important for the horses and clients. You just have to go out every day do things over and over until it becomes second nature. Then do it a thousand more times until you are ready to compete. Sometimes the every day grind becomes repetitive, but keeping your mind on the end goal really helps.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My road was not easy, but I dont know how to quit so I have made it as a professional horse trainer. It’s all I wanted to do from an early age so I just worked hard until I made it. Now I work even harder to stay at the top.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
We would go to the square in Denton for drinks and live music.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My family deserves all the credit. They have sacrificed so much for me to become a successful horse trainer. From a little kid to my adult life, they have all so fiercely believed in me.
