We had the good fortune of connecting with Megan Thur and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Megan, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
Before my business was officially off the ground, I didn’t realize the passion I had. I started baking and selling dog treats to sell when my pit bull, Abby, got severely ill. I started making her food and treats at home and even changed her chews to all natural. When vet bills became too high with surgery costs, I decided to make extra treats and do my best to sell them to fund Abby’s care. It wasn’t until her passing that I realized the significance of a healthy diet for pups. I truly wanted to pursue in hopes to get awareness out. Abby’s Barkery became official in 2021

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Abby’s Barkery is focused on the health of pups through diet. . I make every treat from scratch using organic ingredients and local when possible. Even our chews are 100% natural. If your pup hasn’t tried a beef bladder yet, we’ve got you covered! I started making treats when I changed my pit bull, Abby’s diet. I had a handful of vets who could not figure out why she was having horrible seizures and they did not have a ton of hope. I found that changing her diet improved her overall health and well-being. Seeing this change was incredible! It became a must that every chew, treat, and food be the absolute best for her body. Now, I incorporate the same healthy/natural options with Abby’s Barkery.
Starting my business was a great learning experience. You cannot rely on anyone to tell you “how to.” You figure it out on your own with a lot of trial and error! I also learned that those errors don’t mean failure, just to keep going. If I wouldn’t have taken Abby’s health matters in my own hands when I did, I wouldn’t have gotten the extra time with her. I think that’s what sets my business apart from others. My entire heart was focused on saving my dogs life and doing anything necessary. Abby’s Barkery was born from 100%love and I have the same love and passion for my business. I believe this sets me apart from others. If I can create awareness and prevent these types of hardships with other pups and pup parents, I am truly successful.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Most definitely visiting the stockyards, Klyde warren park and the Ft. Worth botanical gardens. Uptown on a Friday night, Uchi for dinner and downtown Dallas for people watching. My favorite Rare Books Bar at J. Theodor would top off the week

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My biggest supporter has been by my side through it all. Starting my business with nothing and being all in, he only cheered me on the whole way. He is by my side for every event whether freezing cold or the hottest Texas day, anytime I need an extra hand, he never disappoints, and if I need that extra “push” when things seem a bit overwhelming, he’s my positive reinforcement! Im beyond thankful for the love and encouragement from my best friend and other half, Adam Oster.
