We had the good fortune of connecting with Megan Pelon and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Megan, so before we jump into specifics about your story and work, let’s start higher level. What’s the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
To never give up when things get hard. To set goals to achieve so you have something to look forward to and know you’re on the right path. It takes time and not one giant leap to get to the final picture.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I absolutely love creating art with hair. From color to cuts. When I can take a blank canvas and turn to my client’s vision, it makes me feel like I have found my calling. My journey hasn’t been easy. From going to school full time to working nights and weekends, plus raising a child, it was exhausting. Getting my first job was exciting getting to work side by side with my old boss. She showed me the ins and outs of the hair world. She planted the seed in me to work harder and preform my best work. Taking my first client was nerve wrecking. Each client after it got easier and easier. Did I have some breakdowns or failures? Yes. Did I possibly feel like this career wasn’t for me and had doubts? Yes. But I never gave up. I soon accepted another job offer at another salon. I currently work for Instyle salon at Jcpenney in Lewisville in September of 2018. I started at senior designer and became a master stylist after 3 months. By the end of 2019 I had become America’s best. It’s taken hard work, dedication, long days, and late nights. My journey isn’t over. I will still strive to be the best I can be in my career and plan on reaching more goals along the way!
Any great local spots you’d like to shoutout?
Dallas has quite a bit of night life. Deep Ellum is a good start. Live music, food, tons of bars and entertainment. You name it! The Dallas farmers market is also really neat to check out! A lot of local farmers sell fresh produce, which would make for a great dinner! Concerts are my go to, so if there was a band or artist in town we enjoyed, we’d definitely go see them! There are a ton of venues they could possibly play. Denton also has a lively night scene. Nice local bars and food. Plus the square for day time strolls. Dallas also has some great museums as well, like the Perot, Dallas museum of art, the six floor museum, etc. I also attend aerial classes and we could definitely take a class together. we could definitely find plenty to do!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
First and for most, my son. He keeps me going and helps me never give up. My boyfriend who has helped me emotionally and financially. My old boss Natalie who helped shape the stylist I am today. My new boss Dakota who believes in me and strives to help me succeed.
