We had the good fortune of connecting with Mayura Kulkarni and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Mayura, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I remember being a nursing student and encountering “mean older nurses” who wouldn’t try to encourage me or teach me. I remember one nurse particularly who discouraged me constantly and made me feel like I would not make a good NICU nurse. It was in that moment I knew that I would serve as a mentor to future nurses once I graduated from nursing school. I decided to start my IG page in 2018 to document my journey through NP school and share tips to future nurses. I wanted to be that person who could help future nurses. As my page started to grow I knew I needed to create a resource for future nurses to be able to speak to me 1-1 for more advice and guidance. This is what lead me to start my business, Nurse Mayura! My business offers services to guide students and nurses to help them succeed in their nursing path!
What should our readers know about your business?
Nurse Mayura LLC is what I call “your one stop source for all things nursing.” My goal is to offer different services and resources for students to succeed in their nursing path. I know what it’s like to be a nursing student and be intimidated by all the knowledge we have to learn. Often, student nurses encounter preceptors who are unwilling to help and encourage students. Thats where I like to step in. I want to offer guidance, encouragement and skills that can help these students push toward their goal. I help students with various things such as help on applications to nursing schools, resume edits for job applications, interview coaching for both application to schools and jobs and semester long mentorship programs. My mentorship program is for nursing students. Each month we do various individual and group zoom sessions to cover different topics to help these students in nursing school and clinical. I was a nursing student just about 6 years ago and I still remember those experiences which is why I will always understand these students and help them to reach their goals.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Dallas is my favorite city to live in! There is so much to do here. I would start with brunch in downtown. One of my favorite spots to get brunch at is Saint Ann Restaurant & Bar! From there, I recommend visiting Klyde Warren Park. On a good spring day, the weather is perfect to sit outside and relax on the lawn! If you skip brunch or breakfast you can also grab a bite to eat at one of the amazing food trucks that will be parked at Klyde Warren Park. Another great place to go is the reunion tower. You can get amazing city views at the top of the reunion tower. For anyone that is a history buff, you won’t want to miss the Sixth Floor Museum at Dealey Plaza! Here, you can see the exact spot JFK was assassinated and learn more about that day and what happened in Dallas. For some evening drinks, I would head to Sky Blossom. They have really pretty cocktails to start your night with! From there I would head to Waterproof at the Statler. You get amazing rooftop views from here. I’d also go downstairs to Bourbon and Banter for a speakeasy experience at the Statler. For dinner, I would recommend eating at Sixty Vines in uptown! They have an amazing selection of wines and food!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I need to give a huge shoutout to my parents, sister and fiance who have always supported me in this journey. Without their encouragement, I would not have taken the step to pursue starting my own small business. They are constantly helping me with creating new tools, resources and ideas for my business!
