Meet Matthew Kennedy | Audio Engineer and Producer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Matthew Kennedy and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Matthew, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
The most important factors behind my success is never giving up. positive attitude and always trying my best. The music industry is a difficult road to navigate with lots of speed bumps. I have met so many talented individuals through out the years who gave up. Never give up! Always be positive, a huge contribution to creating music is the vibe of the atmosphere. Negative energies are never a help and will usually hinder the process.
I always try my best with what is presented to me. Not everything is going to be perfect every time and that is ok, I find the best elements in a project and bring them to the for front.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I consider myself as an artist even though my title is Audio Engineer / Producer. There is no set of rules to creating / engineering music and everyone does it a different way, so I consider Engineering an Art. Engineering of music is always changing, nothing is ever the same, every song is different, every project is different, there is never a formula to create a final product. I believe there are 2 things that set myself apart from others, the first is that I very much “care” about the music I work on. I want the best for the project and great success for the artist. The second is my creativity, I try to be apart of the creative side of every song as much as possible. I was able to get to where I am today professionally mainly from never giving up and always having a positive attitude. It has not been the easiest path with lots of challenges to overcome. One of the ways I would overcome challenges would be to remember my family and friends for all their support and the efforts they have put in to help me.
The biggest lesson I have learned is to make sure I am surrounding myself with people who support me and my dreams. Being a creative in an unsupportive environment is hitting a break wall.
What I want the world to know about my work is that I hope the music I am apart of becomes apart of them as much as it has me.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
This is interesting question for myself now that I am 40 with a family. Does my best friend also have kids and are bringing them? A few fun things I would do with another family is go check out Fort Worth, we always enjoy going to Sun Dance Square and the Stockyards to wonder around. A day at the park always sounds fun lol, can play roller hockey and soccer. The Perot Museum is a great place to check out, and while over there maybe drive around down town Dallas. Main Street in Grapevine is always fun. If my “best friend” is up for it San Antonio is always fun to visit.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
A greater part of my success is derived from the love, encouragement and support from a lot of people. I am going to highlight a few key individuals that really made this happen for me. My wife is a huge supporter to my career, she is always loving and encouraging, and has always been there for me. I met my wife when I was in college, she has been there since the start from me being a full time intern, working my way to staff engineer while also working a 2nd job, to now, owning my company. She is the heart and soul of why I am able to achieve the things I do today. My parents and family have supported my dream to work with music from day 1 showing them Full Sail University, helping me be able to attend college, watching our children when I was working my 2nd job or when a last minute session came up, they have always been there for me. Lastly is Alex Gerst, owner of Empire Sound Studio, he is always and encouraging and supportive of everything thing I do. What all of these people have in common is that they believed in my dreams and have given their support, love, and encouragement to myself and family to help make my dreams come true.
