We had the good fortune of connecting with Mary DeMuth and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Mary, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
I have been an author in the publishing industry for twenty years. So when I started my own literary agency, I had the benefit of drawing on all that experience as an author. I understand authors. I understand how publishers work. I have experienced all aspects of the publishing process from writing to editing to proposals to sales to contracts to covers to promotion and platform creation. Because of that, I am best able to come alongside my authors because I’ve been in their shoes many times.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Most literary agencies are not communal. As an agentee, you typically don’t know the other authors that agent represents. But I have a high value of community. My authors know each other. In fact, they help each other succeed. Every year we have a retreat where we learn together and help each other grow as authors and entrepreneurs. Every month, we meet on Zoom where I bring in publishing professionals to teach my authors. We celebrate birthdays and victories together, and my authors help launch each other’s books.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Since I’m in Rockwall, I would have to take them to Chiloso, a Tex-Mex restaurant that now has many branches, but started here in Rockwall. Their breakfast tacos are my absolute favorites.

If it were in the spring, summer, or early fall, I would invite them to the Farmer’s Market on Saturday where we’d pick up fresh produce for the week, listen to music, and run into friends.

Any time of year, we would go to the Arboretum, take a picnic.

The DMA is lovely too.

If there were any festivities in McKinney, I’d take them to the square, and we’d eat and shop our way through.

Dinner: Zanata’s in Rockwall for the wood fired pizza.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I have been attending the Rockwall Christian Writers Group since 2000. That monthly meeting has been the impetus for me to pursue traditional publishing, and several of the writers in that group have now become coworkers in the publishing space.
