We had the good fortune of connecting with Martye Hickman Jr. and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Martye, we’d love for you to start things off by telling us something about your industry that we and others not in the industry might be unaware of?
I feel like the labor as well as product cost are definitely looked over in this industry. Marketing, how did you come across my brand in the first place ? Quality oppose to generic ingredients, all of these things run through my mind weekly.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I started having to cook for my self when I moved out of my mom’s house at 13. Living with my single father, I had to grow up fast. Ultimately I gained family who really weren’t my blood but we all ate together and we all had each other’s back. Think of it as a culture of “Hood Babies” imagine all of those different family’s spreading out and mixing with other families. That’s a life long network my friends. Over the years I’d cook for friends and everyone would tell me how the flavor was so vibrant and balanced. That gave me the idea of wanting to provide so thing to all chefs and cooks. SavaThaFlavaLLC Handcrafted Seasonings and herbs!

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I’m pretty country, we would start out every day with one outside fun, mud riding and hiking trails or walking country towns. Next every meal will be fresh bought and we would cook it that night, make a turn up out of it. Get lit just a bit. Basically a trip with me will save you two or three!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to give a Majory shout out along with honor to God! Bringing me all of the people and family I needed to accelerate towards my dreams. My younger sister Selina taught me how to cook generally, I just ran off with it. Also would like to shout out PinkProblems for be a great business consultant, to my brothers and sisters I love y’all. This is just the beginning!
