Meet Markeyta Mitchell Doaks | Attorney & Entrepreneur

We had the good fortune of connecting with Markeyta Mitchell Doaks and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Markeyta Mitchell, what role has risk played in your life or career?
I think taking risks is pivotal in anything you truly want to do because it focuses you to step out of your comfort zone. For me, taking risks in my career has allowed me the opportunity to have more freedom than I typically would’ve in a traditional 9-5 job. I have autonomy over the cases and individuals I want to help now. By God’s grace, I’ve been able to achieve far more in my career now by taking risks earlier on rather than waiting for that perfect moment that never actually comes.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I practice personal injury, real estate, and probate law. My mission is to protect individuals’ property, legacy, and wealth. I do this by creating wills, trusts, and other documents for my clients.
Again, I am most proud of having my own firm because of the autonomy. It has given me a piece of mind while simultaneously giving me anxiety to make sure every client’s needs are met. I am excited about partnering with some local businesses in the community to provide low bono legal services to their employees and employees’ immediate family members.
In 2020, I resigned from my associate attorney position in downtown Dallas and participated in The Dallas Bar Association’s attorney incubator program, “Entrepreneurs in Community Lawyering” (ECL) for a year. I received coaching and mentoring about what it takes to launch and maintain a successful law practice. Saedra A. Pinkerton, ECL’s Director, really deserves so much of the credit as she really made sure that I was fully equipped and prepared for whatever was thrown my way.
As far as lessons I’ve learned, I’ve learned that when things become unclear or you don’t know what to do, the best way to tackle it is to take a step back from everything and get a clear picture of the goal or what you’re trying to achieve so that way, you’re able to get a full picture of everything before focusing on the nuances. I also credit every challenge I’ve overcome to my faith in God.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Definitely Studio Movie Grill. I love a good movie food and drinks! I’d also take them to iFly just because I’ve been dying to go for years. I would use them as an excuse to go. We’d also visit the African American Museum, AT&T Discovery, and some type of escape room.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My parents. I remember vividly my father visiting me at my fast-food job when I was in the 12th grade and giving me numerous reasons why I should pursue a career in law. Back then, I knew I wanted to major in political science because I wanted a job in politics but I hadn’t ever considered law or had any interactions with any black female attorneys. The idea seemed so farfetched that it initially scared me. However, with my father and my mother’s motivation and support which was constant throughout my undergraduate and law school journey, I was able to get to where I am today.
