We had the good fortune of connecting with Mark Murray and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Mark, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
Growing up, I was always inspired by music. Listening became an obsession. While my peers were watching TV I was far more interested in listening to music, letting my mind create the images that would accompany the track. Collecting music, refining my hi-fi system and learning to play my instrument became my lifelong hobby. I am fortunate to have been able to turn that hobby into a career.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I have served as in-house audio engineer for the last 24 years at TRG Creativity, a national branding agency in Dallas. There I have been blessed to serve some of the most amazing creative minds in the business to create work for iconic brands like The Home Depot, Chick-Fil-A and RAM Trucks. I have recently started some independent work as Creative Audio Tech providing technical and creative services to the region. I have had opportunities to work with some great up and coming artists like Lepidoptera Music, Jimmy Baldwin and Four Stories Tall. On the technical side I have been providing assistance to the Venture X flexible office spaces franchise developing their podcasting studios. If that weren’t enough, I am also recording and performing as a solo electronic musician under the name Borgbilly.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
DFW has some amazing sights, sounds and flavors. There are many mainstream, well known locations and activities that everyone can find in Dallas – the DMA,The West End, The Meyerson, the big sports arenas – and I would certainly make sure a visitor would get to experience one or more of those venues/events, but I love the little hole in the walls best. I love the more underground music scene that Dallas has to offer like the Dallas Ambient Music Nights shows at the historic Texas Theatre, the Caustic Beats show at Charlie’s Starlight Lounge (yep, a good ‘ol dive bar) or maybe one of the touring acts that play at The Deep Ellum Art Company. When it comes to food, Dallas has way too much to offer. A trip to Pecan Lodge is certainly in order for someone who wants to sample world class Bar-B-Q. I have a deep love for asian foods and as with my taste in music, I love the little family owned restaurants that aren’t in the tourist guides. Tom Yum Kung Cafe kicks out some dynamite Thai and Lao dishes, Beba Barbecue grills some outstanding Pakistani cuisine and no one can beat the southern goodness of Celebration.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My career could have never grown wings had it not been for Don Caldwell, a recording studio owner in Lubbock, Texas who gave me my first studio job and taught me the ropes. He was always honest and supportive, ready to lend advice and knowledge when I needed it most. My next big break came when TRG Creativity opened their doors to me and gave me the resources I needed to implement an audio program within the agency. This is where I was given the opportunity to work with some of the most amazing, most creative minds in the world of branding communication. They truly allowed me to move up to the next level.
