We had the good fortune of connecting with Mark Kitchens and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Mark, can you share a quote or affirmation with us?
We have a slogan we go by- Be heard, not herd. You have to be authentic in order to be seen, and you have to speak your own mind in order to be heard. If you’re repeating something you’ve heard, its not necessarily you if you haven’t explored that thought on your own. I’ve always like the little play on words this phrase throws at you. Basically it boils down to being yourself is the best way to move forward.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Stone Machine Electric is best described as a weirdo jam band (we call it doom jazz). Our genre can loosely be considered stoner rock, Our sound is heavy, and in a live setting we also like to improvise. We have structured songs, so when we play live they may be altered or we’ll improvise in between songs to make each show different.

I wish we could say we made a living off of our music, but this industry is constantly changing and there are tons of other bands trying to get heard. It has taken a lot of effort to get to where we are at now. You have to be at it daily or you’ll fade into the background.

In the last year we signed up with Desert Records to release our latest album, The Inexplicable Vibrations of Frequencies Within the Cosmic Netherworld, back in December. Working with Brad at Desert Records has been great, and it’s been our best release so far.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My wife, Lynda, deserves a shoutout. She understands what’s going on in my various endeavors and is mostly supportive, ha! But really, she is the one who supports me and keeps me going and helps me keep focus.
